How does one determine if a players speed translates to the NFL.............is a 4.3 from Willie Gault the same as a 4.3 from Deon Sanders..............the answer might surprise you...............Gaults differential in his 20 short shuttle predicted he was a track guy while Deon's shuttle showed him to be the most elite speed athlete ever tested? Why you ask......................read more here.

A general rule of thumb for comparing speed (the 40-yard dash time) to quickness and change of direction (the 20-yard short-shuttle test) was to take the 40 time and subtract the short-shuttle time and expect a 0.5 difference. For example, a player with a 5.0 40 time needs to run a 4.5 short shuttle to get the 0.5 differential. Simply stated, his speed and his quickness relate to each other.................... A man who runs a 4.4 40 and a 4.4 short shuttle is really a guy with straight-line speed who may not play very fast because of a lack of quickness..................... He is often referred to as a guy with "track speed." Conversely, an athlete who runs an average time of 4.7 in the 40 but can hit the short shuttle in 3.9 -- significantly better than the 0.5 differential -- can overcome his average speed with great quickness and change of direction.

Therfore the higher the number in difference the better quickness and the faster the player plays................this is why Drew Bennett is a good WR.........he runs a 4.55 but his shuttle was 3.77 a difference of .87 which was a top twenty value the yr he finished college.............no one thought enough of him to draft him but the number predicted something to CO Brocato...............This yr I expect two guys to post the big differentials............SNewton and IStenbeck..............I think both will be second day guys but both will have high differentials...............

Who is Stenbeck? Do you mean Stanback?

10 yard time is important too. But regardless of all these #'s, there are guys who are good football players w/o good #'s.

OK, so what was the differential for Woolfolk when he was at the combine? Considering there were about 10 CBs that have had far superior NFL careers picked that same year after he was picked I would think something like this formula was what led to the error.

Numbers I looked at show right at .5 for Wooly.

sometimes the best 22 year olds are not the best 25 years olds, or 30 year olds. It would be nice if it were as simple as a formula, but if it were, there wouldn't be any scouts, or GMs for that matter, making anything above minimum wage.

    Woolfolk obviously the exception..

Not sure why bongo used willie gault as an example since gault had a pretty good career with almost 7000 yards receiving and 44 TDs. Nobody can say that gault's speed didn't translate to the nfl since his yard per catch was 19.9. That's a career average folks!

Gault was the best WR on the 85 bears when he averaged 21.3 yards a catch. Seems to me that gault was exactly the type of player they were looking for when they drafted him in 83 and was a big time dangerous deep threat. Had he played in miami or san francisco in the 80s his numbers would have been awesome.

He had 4 catches for 129 yards in super bowl 20 including a 60 yarder. His speed didn't translate to the field?

Edit: Oh yeah i just remembered gault had a 100 yard kick off return for a TD against the redskins in 1985 fueling a 45-10 route. Another example of how gault's speed didn't translate onto the field?

Look if we really want to study this issue look at the times for 2 guys, pacman and devon hester. Go back and study randy moss' times. Lateral speed is probably much more important to a corner than a WR.
