Memphis was a basketball school before Cal. UT isn't a basketball school with Pearl. The only reason Pearl is with UT is because they were dumb enough to pay him.
He'll still lose that job within 3 seasons.

How is UT exposure better? You're nuts. UT BASKETBALL gets no coverage. Memphis is ranked, winning, and thus gets tv time.

As for Knox being a better city- it is. If you like that atmosphere. Most BASKETBALL players would prefer Memphis over the much more redneckish Knoxville. Memphis is less 'Tennessee' like which makes it more appealing for the future basketball star.

And Pearl is 3rd on the list at UT. And it's not even close.

and coaches are turning down Memphis? Which ones? Unless you're referring to Mike Anderson, and that's simply because Memphis wasn't going to pay him as much as Missouri.

Not sure why you think this, unless you think Pearl leaves UT.

The only scenario where he is fired is a complete freefall for UT's men basketball. I just don't see that as likely. As long as he makes NCAA tourneys over NIT tourneys, UT will be happy to have him.

The SEC in general gets better coverage than Conf USA

Fair enough. Except talking about Pearl's attitude he may prefer the family-style/college Knoxville atmosphere over the city atmosphere of Memphis. Some do, myself included.

Also, I'd say UT = Memphis for a "future basketball star". Particularly now, that Memphis is likely considered on the downslope. I'm not sure why a potential future basketball would choose Memphis over UT? I don't think the Grizzlies having a franchise there would be a good reason.

That could be a real long term problem if Memphis isn't willing to pony up for a good coach....

Let's see. Pearl wasn't interested. Mike Anderson wasn't interested. Tim Floyd wasn't interested. Scott Drew...SCOTT DREW...wasn't interested. You can do all the "they were never asked by the Univ. of Memphis" stuff, but they were all contacted by the boosters.

The TV coverage is head and shoulders better in the SEC than Conference USA. Period. Especially now with the new ESPN deal that essentially will become the SEC Network adding atleast 3 more nationally televised Basketball games a week. How may nationally televised games did Memphis play in once the conference started? Memphis is simply the best team in a mid-level conference. It was more Cal than Memphis.

And again. Bruce Pearl is the highest paid coach at the University of Tennessee.

Where are you getting that they werent interested? lol Anderson signed with Mizzou while Memphis was still trying to keep Cal.

Give me some references, some sources, something. Don't just assume people aren't interested because Memphis hadn't hired yet.

SCOTT DREW VOLUNTEERED to come to Memphis, and is seen now as a backup plan. Do your homework, please.

Anyway, Pastner is the man now. A young smart guy that was under Cal and Olsen. He was also the only real coach Memphis had even while Cal was there.
ANNNNNNND....since he's known as a recruiter, well- who knows. Maybe those recruits Cal had just might stay.

I think Xavier Henry will at least.

And it's simple why to play for Memphis over UT. You're going to be in the shadows at UT by NBA scouts. And you probably wont make it to any tourneys.
For Pearl to BARELY (and then prove he shouldnt have) make the tourney this year with all the talent he has is a sure sign that he'll be fired before long. The guy just can't coach.

Pearl was approached. Drew was approached. Tim Floyd was approached.

So the hire was Pastner. Wow.

Floyd wasn't going to leave USC. No way, no how. He knows he only gets good recruits because of his location, and he's not a good coach. It'd be career suicide.
Drew WANTED to coach for Memphis lol.
Pearl knew he'd fail @ Memphis also, and was only taking the bait to get UT to give him more money before he's out of a job in a few years.

Pastner = the best hire out of all those guys other than Scott, IMO. He's definitely smarter and knows the game better than Pearl or Floyd. And he was ranked top 5 as a recruiter NATIONWIDE.

Fact is Drew turned down memphis. He was approached about taking the job and stayed at Baylor.

Memphis said they would make a "wow" hire and one with head coaching experience....

Regardless. Things don't always work out. Money isn't right, etc. They couldn't have done much better with their hire.
Guarantee Pastner keeps this job longer than Pearl keeps his. :)

Yep. Pastner is the guy Memphis wanted to hire all along. The guy that has been on the Memphis staff for 1 year.
