Further evidence the sports God hates me. But here's what I don't get- being a Memphis fan, I've never liked Calipari as a coach. Mostly because he simply doesn't coach.
A great recruiter, yes. Probably the best in the nation. But a coach? Any decent coach would have easily beaten Kansas last year and coasted to the championship rather than allow his team to be beaten in the final seconds.
Any decent coach would have beaten Mizzou and exposed them as less talented and inferior all around. But not Cal.

So here's what I don't get; Why would Kentucky, a team that can get recruits based on reputation alone, want a coach like Calipari? It doesn't make sense. They have the best guard in the nation in Meeks, but they lost in the NIT tourney.
Cal would have lost as well. If the talent doesn't win the games, his strategy (or lack of) will LOSE the games.

"They'll make them when they count" - Cal on free throws. :grrr:

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Gloat. Cal is perhaps one of the best recruiters ever. But I do think his coach skills are questionable...no way does Missouri or Kansas have more talent than Memphis. I know alot of UK fans will get all excited about the players he will bring in, but his classes won't be any better at UK than at Memphis. The irony is I'm not all that worried about him going to UK from a UT perspective. For some reason, we do quite well against him.

If he allows those kids to follow him and leave Memphis decimated, he is a real doosh....

That's what will hurt most, is this upcoming recruiting class not being there next year. :(

Kentucky has no talent outside of Meeks and Patterson. Tubby wasnt a great recruiter and didnt even offer players like Corey Brewer or Chris Lofton scholarships, and Gillispi was just a disaster in his 2 seasons there. Calipari is a lot like Pitino in his style of play and also his personality, which is what Kentucky wants. They need someone to counter Pitino being at Louisville. They would have rather had Donovan I am sure, but Calipari is easily the next best choice for them and he will have them back in the top 10 in the nation within 2 years, if not immediately.

UK is in a different stratosphere than Memphis when it comes to the importance of the program. I think Calipari will be able to sell the history and importance of the program and get even more kids to go there than he could Memphis. Lexington is a really nice city, they have a $30 million dollar practice facility, and in a few years will likely have a new arena. There are a lot more recruiting advantages with being at UK than there are at Memphis.

Pitino said the same thing about free throws haha... they're such a big part of the game! It's ridiculous... and it's the easiest aspect of basketball to improve on.

Calipari will become college basketball's highest paid coach, but I'm not sure he'll last there. If he doesn't produce within the first three years, they'll cut him loose. UK should never have fired Tubby Smith in the first place. Their decisions are erratic and foolish... Gillespie should have been given at least another year.

Tubby had ran his course. When he left, the program was nowhere near as good as when he got there. Kentucky was easily the best program in the nation when Pitino left, and Tubby won a national title his first year. He never returned to a Final Four after that. And the people who dont understand Kentucky basketball tend to blame the fans for being unrealistic and selfish. The fact of that matter is, is that Tubby coached Kentucky during their longest period ever between final fours. He was there 10 years, and was clearly getting bypassed by the other power programs. Tubby had more than a fair shake at Kentucky.

And you simply cant go 4-9 over your last 13 games, miss the NCAA tournament, and expect to keep your job at Kentucky. Say what you want about that, but thats just how it is and every coach who takes on that job knows that, or at least should know that.

Calipari will have good results at Kentucky because he will bring them the crazy 1 and done kids that they have been missing out on the last several years, which is why they have lagged behind...

after living in Memphis for the last few years.. i have noticed that the fans really don't care how dumb the kids are, as long as they ball on the court.....absolutely the same goes for kentucky.

Yea, I understand... I don't know all the stats on college basketball, so I'm not one to take seriously on this sort of thing. I just thought I'd throw in my two cents on the issue. If you're going to fire Tubby Smith, you gotta go out and get someone better... they definitely didn't do that.
