"When you consider everything we were facing, I think it was the right call."

Interesting read. Cecil was as concerned about the Steelers gaining six yards to put themselves in field goal range as making the first down. So, if the Titans blitz, Ben hits the quick slant and gains a few yards and the Steelers kick the FG. With only a three-man rush, Ben has the time to go deeper and Cecil felt the 8 back could make the play.

God he sounds like Fisher, playing by the odds book. and not by instinct.

It's the Fisher way. Schwartz was great at it too. No matter how many times you watch that same old plan collapse... do it again the next game!

Yeah. How'd that plan work out for you, Chuck?

Isn't that when you have your corners jam the hell out of their WRs (and play MAN TO FREAKIN MAN) and force them towards the sidelines? By the time a WR (or if) got separation from our CBs down the sideline, one of our blitzers is bound to have gotten to Ben.

Yeah, how'd that plan work out for you, Chuck?

If Chuck was a fan he would know Big Ben is the type of QB that does stupid things when blitzed. I guess being a coach and reading the playbook jams your head full of junk and you fail to see the simple picture that everyone else see's.

Chuck needs to be up in the booth with a cold beer and no playbook. let him see whats really going on from another perspective. Then maybe he will see where he goes wrong.

I've never been a fan of changing things at the very end of a game, especially if your regular defense has been working. Sometimes you have to ignore what the clock says.

    A couple of things...

Keep in mind one of our all out blitzes didn't get anyone near Ben for 4 seconds so it's not like it guarantees you pressure.

Second, our 4 man rush was...well...ineffective from their drive near the end of the first half on. As long as we weren't gonna get there, why not change it up a bit with a few 3man, drop 8.

Lastly, we need to find DE's who can beat 1v1 blocking (OT, not TE). It didn't help that I counted at least 5 illegal hands to the face by their OL that weren't called...but as I said in the offseason...our D is built around getting a lot of pressure with the front 4 and if it's not happening, we have serious problems.

If a QB has time to eat a sandwich and pump fake a lot, we are gonna give up big plays and big yardage!

I don't like 8 man back in general, but as a change of pace it's not something to kill Cecil over. And BTW, if we went all out blitz frequently instead, we would have had big problems as well since they were singling up Holmes on Harper with trips on the other side.

At least he improved over Schwartz by putting Hope on top of Finnegan and Griff protecting Harper when needed.

Tactically we were better. Execution-wise, we had problems with our pass rush.

Pressure makes the QB uneasy. Anyone can make a single completion with only 3 linemen rushing and no pressure. Anyone. He has all day to stand back there and wait, you think the Cornerback has a better idea of where the receiver is going than the actual receiver? Someone will get open.

Make the QB work. If he beats you when you blitz then he's doing something, you might as well not even rush 3, just drop all 11 back and hope someone runs in front of the ball, makes about as much sense.

    Because it didn't work.
Nice of you to fail at mentioning that our DBs were playing WAY off their WRs. Why? Finny can keep up with most all WRs in this league, and we all know that he pwns Ward anyway.

Since when has KVB and Kearse lost their ability to beat blockers one-on-one?

You mean like our 3 man rush that allowed the QB to do?

You don't have to go all-out blitz every time.

That's usually how zones work. Finny would not need help over the top in man-to-man.

3-man rush didn't work at any point during the game. The blitz was working. So, where are your odds?
If we take this same game plan against the Colts, expect the same results. If you give these pro QBs time in the pocket, I don't care how many you drop back, they will wait until one gets open. As Manning has done for years, he'll pick you apart.
