There's no way we can fill all of our holes in FA, if we can get a S in the 1st, DE in the 2nd, and WR in the 3rd that could contribute and sign a CB in FA we would be in good shape. We're only going to be able to fill 1-2 needs via FA imo (if that).

I'm all for signing a FA CB. And if we decide that Fuller or Lowry is good enough to play safety, that cuts it down to two major needs we've got to fill with 11 picks. Those seem like pretty good odds.

    Why?

Why can we only fill one or two needs in free agency?

Do you mean it's unlikely we'll be able to get the best players because so many teams are gonna be fighting over them?

Outside of S, there will be good players at our positions of need available in free agency. The problem child position is clearly DE though. If Freeney is franchised, that leaves us with an Adalius Thomas (who may not want to play DE) or the run stopping DE's like Smith, Grant, ect. Otherwise, we go overpay for a speed rusher who's been very slowed by injuries (like Kearse) or we trade a mid-round pick for Simeon Rice and take a chance he can again be the dominant player he's been through 2005. Or we look to the draft where we're unlikely to be able to pick a sure fire good pass rushing DE.

One thing we know for sure....there will be no big time Safety available in free agency which means our starting FS for 2007 is either on the team already (Lowry or Fuller) or we draft one (Nelson, Landry, ect).

Yeah, I meant that it is very unlikely we get 4-5 impact players through FA because the pool is small and there is a lot of teams with $$. It looks like there is not an impact FA FS, and we may not want to overpay for some of these other players.

You are missing the point. We cant only sign impact guys in FA. Our cap space would be gone in a hurry. 1-2 impact guys would be great, and we need several other solid guys in addition who could start if needed or play well off the bench. For instance, if we go into the draft with DE in the shape it currently is in, there is a large chance we will get screwed.

    how so?

the way i look at it, we have decent depth guys in odom and laboy, just not a starter.

I agree, a 1st or 2nd rounder on an impact DE and we will be fine.

So how are FA depth players going to help us or affect how we draft?

Because then we'd be in a position where we MUST draft a DE or be stuck playing Odom and Laboy again. What if the guys we like are not available? Besides, having rookies compete for jobs and possibly win them is good. Handing starting spots to rookies is a recipe for disaster. Is it hard to understand?

it's hard to understand your logic.

you're saying we should go out and overpay for an average pass rusher like smith or grant, then draft someone in the first round who would be starting anyway.

OR, we could go out and sign depth guys who would not be starting caliber(guys we already have) then draft someone in the first who would end up starting anyway.
