Love 'em, but I can leave 'em. His production has tailed off for us, maybe he needs a change of scenery. He's a good Joe, but he can go. (I'm in freestyle mode today)

Bennett to Test Free Agency Market?

SUMMARY: On March 2, Titans WR Drew Bennett becomes an unrestricted free agent unless a new contract is reached before. But with the salary cap up to $109 million per team and 19 teams expected to have more than $20 million in space under the cap, Bennett may prefer to get a full sense of his value around the league. "It would take something strong for me to not test the market," Bennett said. "That's not saying we can't get anything done before March 2. But yeah, it would take a very strong effort on their part for me after three years not to wait the next two weeks." Bennett led the Titans with 46 receptions for 737 yards last season.

Bennett will at least get Givens money if he goes out on the market.

Though I don't think the new GM wants to start out his new job losing Bennett with the Titans needs at WR right now, I don't see them being able to resign him.

Jones needs to be a #2 if not a #1 at some point. Givens should be 100% by '08. I think they make a push to keep Wade. Roby and Williams should be ready to step up their game. Orr is an unknown but appears to have potential.

I don't see Bennett giving the Titans much more than he is now and that doesn't equal Givens money, IMO.

I use the money elsewhere and look to the draft.

    So long, Drop-em Drew :howdy:

    Thanks for the memories.

We should really start a poll on what team he will land with. I could see Volek to Bennett in San Diego... preseason games.

First of all I'm not sure Roby and Williams are capable of stepping up at least based on their poor performance last year. You would think at least one of them could have pushed Wade for more playing time. Wade isn't exactly a stud and if they couldn't displace him I have ?s (wade is a FA also). Even with Givens on the shelf and Jones coming back from the knee both Roby and Williams were almost invisible. Could be the organization has more long term confidence in Orr stepping up.

Secondly we do have the issue with Givens not being a factor at all next year and who knows, he might not ever be as good and he wasn't exactly a stud #1 to begin with. Despite the money we payed Givens that is water under the bridge right now. The Titans have to deal with the hand they have NOW.

Thirdly, even with the #19 pick I wouldn't have confidence a WR at that spot is going to be able to contribute as much more than a #3 guy but who knows. Still, typically WRs don't do much their first year so we shouldn't expect much this year. I would guess whoever we pick has a 50/50 chance or better of never being as good as Bennett at the NFL level.

Finally, we have to consider Bennett's accomplishments this year with the understanding of the situation. For the most part we had less than stellar QB play in the passing game and for the most part Bennett didn't have much of a threat on the other side. As the season progressed, Jones started stepping up and Young was throwing the ball better Bennett's production natuarally increased.

The bottom line is Bennett is a 1000 yard a year WR talent wise, maybe not 1300-1400 yards (although he did put up some good numbers once, Chad Johnson led the league with 1369) but Bennett is certainly capable of putting up Jevon Walker numbers (69 catches - 1084 yards) in a more pass friendly offense yet almost everyone on this board have this fantasy idea that if we just swapped Bennett for Jevon Walker all our problems would be solved. I hope everyone understands that Hines Ward, Plexico Burress, Larry Fitzgerald and Braylon Edwards all had less than 1000 yards recieving last year and the WRs production is relative to the offense scheme and QB. Thus, if Bennett is willing to take Givens numbers or less I say we go for it. Again, simply remove from your mind Givens and his contract because right now who knows his future and even if he comes back it might be two years before he is 100%. Again, also remove from our thinking that simply inserting an Andre Johnson into our lineup automatically will result in a super offensive passing attack and considering there is no Andre Johnson Chad Johnson out there in FA or at #19 when we draft thats not an option anyway (by the way A. Johnson did catch 103 balls for 1147 yards but his YPC was a very pedestrian 11.1 while Bennetts was 16).

I'd like to see us keep him, but it doesn't sound like we will. All depends on the numbers, but I certainly wouldn't go too far. He's had a good career here, I'll be sad to see him go. Now one of the other Titans will have to start drinking at the corner pub regularly so I can buy them drinks...

Yeah, several times. When I was in college and would wait tables at home during the summer, I waited on Eddie and Steve sometimes. It's always nice to see the players out and around in your town.
