When the pitchers gives up no runs , no hits , no one gets on base by walks.

    That is a perfect game.

ryan said it but ill break it down for you....

the best thing a pitcher can get in baseball is a perfect game..

    no hits
    no walks
    no runs
    no baserunners
and he has to pitch the whole game

the next best thing a pitcher can get is a no hitter (facing the minimum)
this is when, he might give up 1 walk, but on the next batter, he grounds into a double play, or he picks the runner off, the minimum number of batters is 27, 3 x 9 = 27. if a pitcher does that its historic. and it has been done this year. through nine innings it must be done.

next is just a no hitter, no hits, no limit on walks.
    through nine innings

after that you go into the 1 hitter shut outs, and complete game shut outs, and all the other gems...

I just think he's overrated. People always crop him up there with the greatest pitchers of all time, but I just don't see it. The seven no-hitters are freaking astounding, no doubt, but if you take that away, he's just another very good pitcher. Yeah, he has 300 wins, but he played 27 seasons. If you average it out, he only averages 12 victories a season, hardly spectacular.
