this phrase, and variations of it -

should not even be mentioned in regards to the game. It's simply not an excuse, nor a missing piece. He's a backup.

Umm, I don't think it is an excuse either, but you don't think the emotional drain could have had an effect on the team?

Not if they call themselves professionals. Harsh but true. We all have "emotional drain", and still go out and do our jobs well. I agree with Gunny, it seemed inappropriate for a wrap up.

Would you say the same thing if he died? Presumably he is friends with some of the players, how would you fair at work if a close friend got shot? For me, it might not have much effect, but it also could have some depending on the circumstances of everything.

i.e. affect focus or sleeping mostly. Once you are on the field probably no effect, but the preparation might be lessened.

Do AP stories always mention when a player's loved one dies? Gets a divorce? Unless you're a high profile player, one's own problems is their own. The fact is, it's usually the media who has to remind the world of something tragic to give the story some jolt. That's why I don't think it was necessary to include.

I agree with you there KamikaZ, it probably didn't need to be mentioned in the wrap up.

thats bs collier probably would have played a few series' if that. excuses excuses, i mean dont get me wrong i feel bad for the guy but cmon. Did the redskins use the death of Sean Taylor as an excuse, no they played hard fought hard and made the playoffs. Sad part is he was the center peice of their d too. Not a good way to excuse a hard fought win by the Titans. End of story of D-fense is amazing.
