What exactly is ubuntu and how does it work? I still plan on keeping my Toshiba until it just completely craps out (which shouldn't be long). I've had this sucker since senior year of high school.

BTW, kinda random, but if any Mac users ever need RAM upgrades then do yourself a favor and buy from macramdirect.com instead of Apple/MacAuthority/etc. MRD is a great outfit and you won't believe how much you'll save buying from them. To give you an example, you can get an extra 4GB for a Macbook Pro for $60 while that extra 4GB upgrade would cost your $200 on apple.com. :sad2:

I've used them many times in the past. They're legit.

It's an Operating System, a free one at that.

The difference between Ubuntu and Windows is that Ubuntu works ;).

Nah, I like Windows 7 but Ubuntu is really good.

No, I've only briefly used Ubuntu when I had a spare PC to muck around with.

I just love the OS, yeah the specs aren't the best.. I'll agree with that.

  9. I use Crucial.com, but I agree it's a lot cheaper with online delivery than it is walking into a store.

    Wha wha WHAAAAT???

You might want to check into that a little more... if you're running Windeath then you should have more than enough memory for most Linux distros. The thing about Linux distros is that they're very small programs that use little resources, so they run great on outdated machines.

The idea is to partition your drive (back it up first, of course) and leave Windows in one partition and install Linux in the other, creating a dual-boot system.

Kubuntu, btw, is basically the same as Ubuntu but with a different GUI desktop. Ubuntu uses the GNOME graphical environment; Kubuntu uses KDE.

You can also run Kubuntu from a CD without installing it in your computer to see if you like it first. It's called a live cd... just download it and burn it from kubuntu.org
