To some, but to others that's the whole definition.

Michael Angelo. I just got a vhs vid from from the 80's from a guy I work with the other day that has lessons from him....well, honestly, it's more just showing off by Angelo :ha: He's bad azz.

Yeah I understand that. I've known very "proficient" guitarists who couldn't write very good songs. For me, I like occasionally watching a "proficient" musician, and appreciating what they can do. But the heart of music to me is a great, full composition.

Talent is more of a universal opinion. It can be judged. If it's all just opinion, then you couldn't measure talent in any subject. But you can. From athletes to singers. Talent may be opinion, but it's an opinion shared by the majority judging.

It's the reason you can post a "best guitar player ever" and get 75% of the people to give the same 3 guys as their answer. Ask "favorite guitar player" and you'll see different results. Doesn't mean everyone will like the guitarist that plays the impossible riffs and what-not, but most will give credit.

I feel the same way. How many bands have we seen come & go that had great guitarists that were only good for ego trip solos. Great musicians, awful songwriters.

Check out the solo at 1 min 50 in this great song. Joe Perry said this is one of the best solos ever written. It's sublime yet it fit's the rest of the song perfectly.
