I decided I wanted to learn some computer programming and I thought Java would be a good one to know since it is so widely used. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone out there had some experience with Java, and what the best way to learn it would be.

Get an introductory book and start programming. Since you have zero experience writing code, make sure to stay away with books too focused on applets. You'll just want the basics to begin with.

    Here's a good starting place:

Also, you may not necessarily need a book. I'm sure there are a ton of notes on the internet about doing stuff in Java. Really, if you want to learn a programming language, the best things to do are either take a course in it or just sit down and start messing with it. But a good book would be the best bet IMO, as it will be organized and have a lot of sample code for you to look at. Going the "free" route could lead to some confusion if you don't find an ordered set of notes.
