49'ers coach unaware of what a first down is

Seriously... I understand what it means. 10 yards if first down yardage. That's great and all but it doesn't matter in terms of field position. There isn't a set number of first downs you have to get before scoring so why measure in first downs? Makes much more sense to measure in yards as the ultimate goal is to gain as many yards as possible during the return to reduce the yards left until you score. Not to reduce first downs you need.

 

520 is on special teams

 

I've never heard that description in over two decades of watching playing football. That said, sure I could see and understand the description.

However, if a returner gets twenty yards, are they said to have gotten 2 first downs? No, that's stupid, it's a twenty yard return, and he offense gets a first down.

Sure the coach knows what he's talking about, but it's a stupid term to use if you ask me. Call it a ten yard return and be done with it. It's not difficult.
