I use to want the 34, forever. However now with Casey.. im against it. We just need a MLB & a DE. Keep Pollard/Verner. Easily top-7 defense next year.

Right now, before free agency and the draft... this is what I envision the transition to look like:

DE - Karl Klug, Lavar Edwards
NT - Sammie Lee Hill, Mike Martin
    DT - Jurrell Casey
    SAM - Akeem Ayers
    MIKE - Colin McCarthy
WILL - Zach Brown, Zavier Gooden
RUSH - Derrick Morgan, Kamerion Wimbley
CB - Jason McCourty, Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Coty Sensabaugh, Khalid Wooten, Tommie Campbell
    FS - Michael Griffin
    SS - Daimion Stafford

IMO, we would need a starter at NT, DE, and MIKE while also getting depth at DT and SAM. This is what I see as possibilities in FA and draft to help:

Daryl Smith ILB, Ravens - FA
Bernard Pollard SS, Titans - FA (Resign)
Terrence Cody NT, Ravens - FA
    Dominique Easley DE/DT, Florida - 2nd Round
Ronald Powell OLB, Florida - 4th Round
Andrew Jackson ILB, Western Kentucky - 5th Round

DE - Dominique Easley, Karl Klug, Lavar Edwards
NT - Terrence Cody, Mike Martin
DT - Jurrell Casey, Sammie Lee Hill
SAM - Akeem Ayers, Ronald Powell
MIKE - Daryl Smith, Andrew Jackson, Colin McCarthy
WILL - Zach Brown, Zavier Gooden
RUSH - Derrick Morgan, Kamerion Wimbley
CB - Jason McCourty, Blidi Wreh-Wilson, Coty Sensabaugh, Khalid Wooten, Tommie Campbell
    FS - Michael Griffin
SS - Bernard Pollard, Daimion Stafford

That would still leave a 1st, 6th, and 7th round pick for offensive players and also we would still have money left over to improve the offense. Easley could be a guy we traded down in the 2nd and still got and maybe get a couple extra picks.

We could field a starting D, but would have no room for depth.

I'd be very ok with going 3-4 although i'm also very happy with 4-3.

Ken is rumored to really want Butler (LONG time LB coach of PIT) who will def want to run a 3-4. I think Ken is also more a 3-4 guy as well. JUST IMAGINE having Dick's protege!! The only problem is that they want him to take over for Dick when he retires (soon I imagine) so they might block that.

Still though (per Butler's wiki page):
Butler moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2003, serving as linebackers coach. He has been extremely instrumental in mentoring the development of the Steelers' renowned linebacking corps. His linebacking experience has helped the Steelers consistently lead the NFL in rushing defense, total defense, and sacks. For example, the Steelers have ranked in the top five for total yards allowed in six of the eight seasons Butler has served, and never worse than the top ten. Similarly, the Steelers have ranked in the top five for rushing yards allowed in seven of the eight seasons Butler has served, only ranking twelfth once in 2003.[2]

Butler has been influential in the development of Pro Bowl linebackers Joey Porter, James Farrior, Lawrence Timmons, LaMarr Woodley, and James Harrison. Harrison, in particular, improved from an undrafted practice squad linebacker into the NFL Defensive Player of the Year under Butler's tutelage.[1]

He is considered a leading candidate to take over the Steelers' defensive coordinator position when Dick Lebeau retires, due to his experience in coaching Pittsburgh's 3-4 defense.[3]

What difference does it make we are already using 3-4 type players in our 4-3. We have 3 guys over 300 lbs starting on the line and our SAM linebacker is basically a 3-4 type guy not a typical 235 lb 4-3 guy. That is the strength of the 3-4, being bigger up front.

Al you basically do is stand Morgan up, Move ayers to the weak side and brown inside and you have a 3-4.

Makes no difference on nickel or dime situations anyway. And it makes no difference if a player is down in a stance or standing up all players seem to be able to make that adjustment.

The Seahawks are a 4-3 team that uses some of the benefits of the 3-4. They use a DT type guy at end and have a 250 lb rush guy in Irvin at Sam linebacker.

They have the typical athletic will backer you see in a 4-3 who can run and cover.

They would probably be more of a cover 2 type team but they obviously have the best DBs in the league and can man up on anybody. They have the best Cb in the league and a free safety who covers like a CB.

What the Seahawks do best however is stop the run. The best run stopping 4-3 defense since the 2000 Ravens. You can't run on them and are faced with a lot of third and long and then they bring in fresh guys as situational pass rushers.

We are doing a lot of these types of things we just need to get better at it.

Every team in the NFL now uses hybrid 3-4 and 4-3 looks. It's nowhere near as absolute as you guys are making it sound.

The Titans can continue to tilt the needle in the direction of 3-4 looks if they want to.
