Well basketball is still perfectly fine, except for the fact you have to be well above average height to really have much of a shot of making to even a mid level college team. Soccer on the other hand, is a sport anyone can play, and it doesn't have nearly the health risks that football does.

The main thing with basketball is that it's so competitive.

If you took most the kids that didn't make it to the NBA draft (VERY few... like 2%... if that) and had them playing soccer all those yrs instead of basketball... could have great odds of playing pro soccer.

And friend and I were asked to go to Scunthorpe to train when we were 15. We were the better of the players in this smaller area, but by no means spectacular. We would have been weeded out in Europe, for sure.

So if half the kids that invest everything into basketball dreams played soccer instead, they'd likely get similar offers.

You can't just assume that great athletes will be great soccer players. It doesn't just work that way. Being on a 110 yard x 70 yard field is way different than the small basket court. Then there's the whole playing with your feet thing, you gotta learn that from child other wise you'll never get a hold of it.
And being 6'6"+ and 200+ pounds isn't and advantage, long strides aren't useful. Smaller, quicker guys like Messi will run around you in circles and make you look stupid.

Soccer is gaining steam in America but of course it's going to fade a bit after the World Cup. I mean it's the biggest sporting event in the world. What would be nice is keeping the fans who just now started keeping up with the team, like within the past year, and after being invested in the team then they'll continue to watch. The people that just watch because of America playing don't really matter, except for ratings.

The US really needs a superstar to build around, sort of like what Deuce said. Dempsey can't be the face, Donovan is done, and Jozy is out of the World Cup so he has like no hype right now with the newer fans. A better MLS would be good but a star player would do wonders.

Lol. I love how people say football is dangerous. Football right now is the safest it's ever been.

Anyone see the guy in one of the WC matches get knocked unconscious when he got kneed in the head and remain in the game? Yeah, that's real ****ing safe.

no I didnt see it but I believe it.

FWIW I like it. whatever damage was done was done. Not likely to happen again in soccer - just sayin'

    30,000 ‘Nazi’ tweets during US-Germany

users tweeted posts containing the word “Nazi” or “Nazis” more than three times per second during the US-Germany World Cup match on Thursday.

Users tweeted some form of the word a total of 30,209 times during the match, according to a graphic shared by a Twitter user and published on the blog “Regressing,” which broke the game down into 15 second intervals and measured how many occurred within that time frame.

Not surprisingly, spikes in Third Reich-related tweets corresponded with plays that were in Germany’s favor. After German forward Thomas Mueller scored the only goal of the match, users bombarded the social network with more than 20 Nazi tweets per second at one point...

Mexico may pull off the upset here. This tournament is all about the western hemisphere. It is something else. Let's hope Costa Rica can keep it going later today against Greece. Then Argentina and USA later this week. Make it the Americas World Cup.
