Very true, but in this specific case, when he decided to retire. It came down to showing respect to a top NFL Lineman. I think teams usually give the player a chance to officially retire over cutting them if its a player had a long successfull career like Hutch.

signing bonus is guaranteed money. You just spread the cap hit out over the length of the contract. When you cut a player then the remaining cap hit from the signing bonus gets acclerated to your current cap. Now you can designate a player a post june 1 cut which allows you to split the cap hit into 2 yrs. To my knowledge you can't designate a retired player as a post june retired player.

Titans coach Mike Munchak issued a statement today about veteran guard Steve Hutchinson, who announced his retirement after 12 seasons, including 2012 with the Titans:

“Hutch obviously had a great career in this league. Over the past decade, he was the best guard in the league in my opinion. I’ve always enjoyed watching him on tape – how he dominated guys. It was great getting a chance to work with him this year and to know him a player and a person. I wish him and his family the best in retirement.”

I guess I'm not getting this. We gave him a signing bonus for a 2 year contract. He left after one year, so why would we not be entitled to get some back?

Just not the way it works. Signing bonus is all paid upfront and is the players money to keep no matter when they retire or get cut. That is why getting a big signing bonus is so important to players.
