Peyton Manning is a perfectionist and I don't see him sticking around for very long if he can't play at high level. There is a decent shot his contract is based on performance or at the least gives either side an out if he can't cut it. Peyton has plenty of money so getting one last big pay day probably isn't the most important thing to him. I'll be shocked if Peyton sticks around for three years if he isn't playing at a pro bowl level for at least 2 of those.

Good post....I was in Tennessee when Manning was at UT, and he really did choke in the big games....could not beat Florida, and I still never forget that Tee Martin.....TEE MARTIN, took basically the same team to the National Championship one year after Manning and the Vols were blown out of the water by Nebraska in the (may miss the bowl here) Orange Bowl.

That carried on to the Colts, when I personally witnessed (in one of my favorite memories as a Titans fan) him choke in Indy against us. Then I watched him lose in the playoffs for several years (looking pretty real bad while doing it), before getting to the SB in 06. You are right, the D, plus the fact that Grossman chokes harder than he does, ensured him a win there. His last SB was Favre-esque, with the pick 6 to seal the deal for the Saints at the end.

I agree, those who think that this means instant SB win are really choosing to ignore the cold hard facts of his past.

That said, as I have said before, I think Bud's real motivation here is, as it always is, MONEY. Look at the step change just on this site....it is blatantly obvious to me that signing Manning ensures sellouts for the foreseeable future, as well as likely a step change in merchandise sales. All good outcomes for Bud.

Having Peyton puts the Titans on the radar nationwide. Right now there are not that many people outside of Tennessee talking about the Titans. With PM that will change quickly.

That's my point....ticket sales, merchandise sales, exposure, etc...all improve with Manning. Just don't expect it to translate to deep postseason any more than it would have on its current course...a healthy Manning is an upgrade, especially in the regular season, BUT, the cap money we spend to get him will not be spent to fill holes on D, etc. Pretty much a net zero from team performance aspect IMO.

I am still about 50/50 on this whole thing. First, I think its the biggest FA chase we have been involved with ever...which is fun to watch. And I do think, unlike many, that Peyton's skill set...his accuracy...his ability to read defenses on the fly....those things would make us more dangerous right out of the gate. He made slot receivers stars....and can put the ball in places I don't believe MH or Locker [at this time] can. So I think he can immediately bring more wins to the table.

However, my bigger questions are will our WRs step up and support that in their play on the field. Can Peyton push our young receivers and TE over the top...or to the next level they need to get to in order for us to get into that "automatic" playoff hunt. We cannot tolerate all the busted/imprecise routes because Peyton's precision depends on it. And will it work well enough to open our running game up. I think it puts a TON of pressure on CJ to come to the dance with some confidence and not be hesitating and guessing every other play.

I guess we will find out...hopefully today. Free agency is sliding past us as we wait and we need to be getting some other holes filled.

All I know...is if he comes out and goes to Denver the HUGE air that has puffed up Titan Nation is going to become an equally deep hole of despair for many and I think no one will be satisfied with what we do in FA.

    Interesting times for sure.

    Go Titans and Go Rams!
If you're against signing Peyton you probably need to get your football IQ checked.
10 win team now at the mininum.

....which they were on their present course. Thanks for making my point for me. Lots more interest, lots more butts in seats, lots more $$ for Bud, but at the end of the season more than likely a very similar outcome.

Wow, I wasn't aware about the Governor call....

SureThing, I know you have been hoping for this and predicting it for a LONG time....kudos to you for the foresight. I am not still real enthused about this, but we should all agree that, if it does not happen, it is NOT because the Titans left anything on the table.

I just hope that the folks supporting this don't turn on the FO if Peyton decides to go another direction. Ultimately, we need to all remember that the Titans could only put on their best show here....you can't force him to sign with us.

If he does sign, I look forward to alot more enthusiasm from the fan base, even if it does not pan out as you all hope on the field. That could be alot of fun for all of us.
