Texans not tagging Mario Williams

I dont think anybody disagrees that Mario will put us over the hump but whether we can afford him that hes worth it.

Meh... Us even bothering with him would really really reeeeeeeeeeally surprise me.

 

Ok so we know we have just over $20M to play with. Let's say Babs signs for $3M/yr, that leaves us with ~$17M. Even with Babs we still need 2 DE's, 1 MLB, 1 C, and a TE... Right now we have 3 TE's but it's obvious Graham is getting cut.

Why can't we make a play for Williams? Cutting Graham frees up $3M. Putting us within reach of landing Mario Williams.

All our needs can be filled thru the draft.

 

Here's the trick... Now figure out what the future cap number will be based on salary growth. Also possible casualties because of a seriously large # being sig to Mario and who is coming up on contract years and we need to retain...

It's not just about what we have open right now but what our future looks like also.

 

Realistically, Mario probably signs day 1 or 2 before we even hear what the Titans are doing. We tend to let the first few days of the frenzy go without activity.

I don't think we'll be the team to sign Mario, but I'm sure we will at least aggressively pursue him. Maybe try to get him to sign a $13mil a year deal rather than $15mil.

There are really only around 5 teams who could sign him. And honestly, we'd probably be the best fit.

Someone told me the Cowboys and Patriots are going after Mario, but that makes no sense... The Cowboys are over the cap and the Pats must be close.

 

What about John Abraham? I know hes older but he would fill in nicely for the next couple years until we find a DE in a nearby future draft.
