Titans trying to bring back Jason Jones

I think what Munch means by calling Jones a swing DL guy is that he can play DE or DT but certainly the Titans must figure Jones best fit is rushing the passer as a DT along side Klug. They certainly want to find another effective DE to pair with Morgan that can get more pressure on the QB.

IMO Jones has a couple of issues as an every down DT. Contrary to previous comments made Jones does get knocked off the ball against the run. He isn't a leverage guy. The other issue is he can't stay healthy when he plays full time at DT. But probably my biggest beef against Jones is about 3/4 of his career sacks came in about 4 games. Once a year he gets matched against an OG that can't handle his speed and he has a great game. The problem is he doesn't do much in the other games. Now some will blame his move to DE on his lack of sacks last year but of his 3 sacks one was from DE that I know of. He played significant reps at DT in passing situations and still wasn't all that effective. Fans seem to remember his big games, like the one against Pitt in 2008 but h doesn't have many of those.

I suspect the team wants to have specialized players like Klug and Jones that play in their nickel and dime schemes. Rather than having interchangeable DTs that rotate in and out they want players that play in certain situations. If they can sign Jones for a reasonable deal to b a situational DT I'm all for it. I wouldn't pay him DT starter money. He doesn't hold up and is overrated.

I really like Jason Jones, and really hope we're able to keep him around. He's a cool guy who brawls with Steelers, how could anyone not want him around? But it's hard to go against bringing in Mario and keeping Cortland.

 

I know a lot of people will disagree with me but i think the #1 priority should be finding a massive run stuffing, double team eating DT. Instead of finding a pass rushing DE. Our problems with the run seem to be getting overlooked.

Look at our defense this past year. I have very little doubt that if we were to keep our same personnel from last year our pass rush would still improve. Klug, Casey, And morgan are all playing there first true year. Ayers also has the ability to be a good pass rusher but he did not get much of a chance to do that last year. Besides what is the point in going to get mario or avril if teams are just going to plow you over in the middle. There is not much hope for our run defense without upgrading DT beside Casey. a DT pair of Casey/Jones or Casey/Klug is not doing any justice for our run D. None of our DTs with the exception of Casey on accession can hold a double team.

We need to look into DT in the draft. I really like Poe as a 4-3 DT, he has the size and strength to dominate offensive lines and eat up double teams to free up our linebackers. His ceiling is also very high as well could very well become a Pro bowl player. Maybe we should trade around and try to get Poe as a run stuffing DT and get a pass rushing DE like curry or perry. I have no idea how to do that but imagine a DL of Morgan/Casey/Poe/Curry or perry. Would be effective on all downs. instead of a pass rushing only line of Morgan/Casey/Klug/Pass rushing DE.

 

It would be great to have a DT that required a double team in order to run the ball,would fit nice next to Casey.Jones looked a lot better when he was rushing aganist Guards. Last year when kicked out aganist Tackles he wasn't as effective,those guys are good athletes too.It will be interesting to see how we handle the defensive line through free agency and the draft.Not too many DE can set the edge and rush the passer effectively

 

so what your basically saying is this...

sign mario for the sure fact that he will beast it up at 4-3 dend
resign finny for the leadership and see if he would take less to remain a titan and bring in mario
resign babs for a 2-3 year deal
draft poe to eat double teams
draft martin to play opposite of babs
