Well, if they throw to him 10 times, then yeah, he probably isn't going to get 500 yards. If they throw to him 4 or 5 times a game, then there is absolutely no reason that he couldn't...

 

I like Craig Stevens but he wouldn't ever be able to replicate what Witten does on a regular basis stat-wise. Yes I do believe however that he could be a guy who you could target 4-5 times a game, and maybe that turns into 40-50 yards a game, but he wouldn't have 8 catches like Witten does at times. No way. Stevens is effective cause he's consistently responsive to whats happening around him. I think Stevens is every bit as capable to making the circus catches Witten's made but he's not asked to run more than a few routes a game. Witten runs around 20 routes a game, so he's coming up with 8 catches on some days, Stevens is always in to block, and not cause he can't catch, but cause he blocks really well.

If Cook could set the edge, he'd absolutely be starting and having 80 receptions a year, but his inabilities give accountable players like Stevens a job. Hell, Bo Scaife was as average as a TE comes, and he even had 58 catches one year just because there was no one else we could call upon at TE. Stevens is going into his 4th season, he's ready if Cook isn't.

 

Stevens needs to add about 100lbs in the offseason if he just wants to be a blocker. He can take Amano's spot.

 

Stevens is a capable receiver if used as the recipient of the defense keying on other players.

Witten? Lol no. But he has made some good catches and a good blocker. Defenses that sleep on him will get hurt. Two TE set but cook playing slot oppo of stevens would allow multiple plays being called off the line.

If cook can become a better blocker of course Stevens role becomes less important but it doesn't hurt to keep him.
