good post. you have changed my views on the matter. i would say coaching is MAX 25% of the equation tho.

however i would say that in the LSU Alabama game, coaching will make a bigger difference than the super bowl game, cuz in college you will have to start some straggler who will be a huuge weakness and open up some crazy schemes that dont even exist in the nfl. also college QBs arent nearly as good as NFL QBs which opens up the game a little more

Doesn't the 'Dream Team' make this thread redundant?

Quite the opposite. The talent in the NFL is spread out and the talent between the best and worst teams isn't a whole lot which is why most NFL games are close. College is where talent matters the most and why recruiting is about the biggest job the coach has.

Plumb the history of the nfl and you see many average coaches with great success.

Barry Switzer has a super bowl ring! Nuff said? He was not a good nfl coach.

I don't think Chuck Noll was anything above an average coach but for 6-7 years he had the best players so he won 4 super bowls. When his talent was average he produced 8-8 type teams.

Think about it there is no cap limitation on what you can pay a coaching staff. Yet the most highly paid head coaches make not even half what the most highly paid player makes.

A top QB might make more than the entire coaching staff!

Even more so now when the passing game is more prominent and QBs get more special treatment.

Ok, by some of these statements, the Titans are wasting their time having MH tutor Locker. Just throw him in there and let him do his thing. The other teams did that this season and look what happened. None of them have set the field on fire. So they must all be mediocre to poor or coaching matters in the NFL. I'm not talking head coaches here, because I think they are just bosses. It's all the assistant coaches that do the coaching. Of course talent matters, but good coaches can many times take the mediocre and make them into a winning team, a la Wade Phillips.
