I don't think there's any legitimate argument that pacing the rookie for a while would be detrimental to his career, but there are legitimate reasons getting thrown to the wolves too early could. If there's even an chance that sitting is ultimately better for Locker then I as a fan can certainly endure one year of Collins-ball.

I wouldn't call putting him in early "throwing him to the wolves" necessarily. We have a strong running game, and we probably always will be a run-first team. He will be protected, unlike P Manning who was l in a screwed situation when he took the field in Indy the first time. Our offense is built with safe throws and running the ball. There couldn't be a better situation for a rookie IMO. He won't be asked to be the one and only star on this team with CJ around.

On a different note, to answer the original question, we should definitely pick up a veteran, but I think as a security blanket, not as a starter. Under no circumstance do we want to see Rusty starting this season.

I'm hoping your right JC. If Locker can help us score than we're not in bad shape heading into next year.

Slow down and think about this now.......put fantasies aside.

We are going to have to pay Locker #1 money....and soon. Now that we've selected a QB at #8, you cannot afford to just bring in a FA such as McNabb, Smith or even Hasselbeck. We can't trade for Palmer, Kolb or whoever since they'll want starter money and a starter job. They will all want $10M plus for the mop-up/mentor role, that's even if they accept a temporary role. Logically, we're probably going to get a journeyman guy like Simms, Bulger or even re-sign Kerry for short term. It's the business side of football.

    We have to.

Locker is going to need a lot of work. Just as much as Vince did.

He wasn't comfortable in the pocket in college, so in the NFL- scary.

Last year.. people were saying Locker was better than Bradford... The rams did better than us last year with less weapons.

I'd like to see them go after Bulger. He may have gas in the tank and he doesn't have to be great, just be better than Collins and offer us a serviceable passing game. I'd sit Jake much of the year if we can and if Bulger finds his game again, maybe we get 2 years out of him and then Jake is ready to pull his Steve McNair imitation and the franchise is set for the next 8 years.

Coach Mike Munchak confirmed that Jake Locker will "have the opportunity to come in and compete right away" for the starting quarterback job.

That's fine you feel that way, and since you don't know me personally, you probably should feel that way. Your approach is how I would feel too if I didn't know me. And not to toot my own horn, but anything and everything I've shown an interest in I've excelled in. The fact Locker reminds me of me is incredible. You have no idea how pumped I am about this team going forwards. Getting Vince Young felt great too at the time, but I could never relate to Vince in the way I relate to Jake. I know how I'd handle things, and seeing Locker come in simply reassures me this team can make some great choices. Even with a guy like McNair who we all recognized as top talent, I never felt safe in regards to knowing this team was in good hands. But with Jake Locker it's another story. Last year I said Bradford was the best QB, the year before that I said Stafford was the best QB. In 2008 I said Matt Ryan would be good, and the same can be said all the way to 2007 when there was no one good at QB, but I then did say Troy Smith would likely have the best NFL career. As bad as that class was, I think I may have been right. Point is, I feel I have a good handle on football, and I know what I'm talking about. If I'm behind a guy saying good stuff, everyone should too. That's just me tho.
