Exactly, but I will even take it further than that. He also belittles people around the world who are still suffering under slavery. There is still actual slavery in many 3rd world countries not to mention sex trades around the world which is also slavery. Anyone with an ounce of perception of the world around him/her would realize that playing in the NFL is not modern day slavery. Modern day slavery is actual slavery. An incredibly idiotic thing for him to say.

If AP is a slave and has a housekeeper, what does that make her?

Likening slavery will never go over well with the public, but he is far from the first to use that term in sports. When Curt Flood sacrificed his career to file an anti-trust suit against MLB, he likened the reserve clause to slavery and called himself a "well-paid slave". William Rhoden wrote a book called Forty Million Dollar Slaves.

Many, many people FAR smarter than Adrian Peterson have likened the employment situation in pro sports to slavery. It has nothing to do with compensation.

It isn't a bad analogy in itself. The problem is how it is and will be perceived. AP should have known better, but I see absolutely nothing wrong with what he said.

well enlighted me how being paid enough money in 6 months to change your families zip code for generations is comparable to being stripped of your basic human rights

Slavery is being forced to do something against your will. I'm pretty sure most kids growing up choose to want to be a professional athlete, as did AP. If you don't want to be a 'slave' in your own mind, go buy some property in Idaho, grow your own food, build your own house, and take care of your own self and family, by yourself. And don't (in your own mind) force others to build your home, store the shelves at the market you buy your food at, and build the cars you drive.

Slavery: a civil relationship whereby one person has absolute power over another and controls his life, liberty, and fortune

Both involve force, and neither are beneficial except to 1 party. To financially gain in a free society, you must provide others with some service or product. AP works very hard and is very well compensated. A free society also allows you to quit your job at any time for any reason and begin employment elsewhere. AP can easily do that if he feels his job is slave like.
