Again, what the hell is the point of comparing the two? First rounders get more chances to succeed than second rounders. More chances = higher success rate. Simple. VY would have been cut after 2 years had he been a second round pick.

Sorry, when I do this on my phone it sometimes changes the words on me but you get the idea...

as someone else said, you have invested a huge amount of money in a QB taken so high so they will get every opportunity to succeed. If we also keep in mind that that a 5 year starter doesn't necessarily equal success or a top 10 NFL qb, the odds of getting what your paying for are probably about 50/50 that you get a good starting qb in the top 10.

Combine that with no stud WBA in this draft class and you're looking at having a better than 50/50 shot at taking a guy that doesn't pan out and setting the franchise back for the next 5 years.

Is that a risk you wanna take? Plus Newton or Gabbert are gonna need time to develop. The only qb's I think could start next year are Mallet (who has a bunch of red flags about potential drug use, leadership, and work ethic) and Ponder (who has red flags for having a weak arm, injury prone, and only partially coming from a pro system).

If your willing to develop Gabbert or Newton, I still woolly take them in' the top 10. The risk to the franchise is too great IMO.

In addition you have to factor in' the player we could have taken. For a weak qb class, I wouldn't draft one in the top ten and probably not at all unless I could get a Mallet in end 2 and I alleviated concerns over his red flags.

The biggest problem is that without a collective bargaining agreement, we can't trade or sign a free agent qb for perhaps quite awhile. It will take a very cool GM to not panic and select a qb first just because we're 'supposed' to.

There aren't many teams in the league that will stick with a QB (and start him) for five full years unless he is playing well. It doesn't matter if he was a first round pick. I think you are over-emphasizing that point. The data shows that first round QBs are usually successful. Doesn't mean any of the guys this year will be, but it means something.

There are 32 selections made in the first round. Though I will agree most early first-round picks get more opportunity, I don't think the same can be said of those who are picked 16-32.

Something else to consider, which I have seen in a lot of mock drafts recently. I have seen us taking AJ Green. Which I know we need a franchise QB but if we don't like what we see or are able to get who we want, then we can always get another strong WR to complement Britt. Possibly getting a QB 2nd round such as Locker or Ponder (who I think will be a good pick). AJ Green would be too good to pass up :)

Ponder/Locker in the second would be great, but chances are neither of them last long, MAYBE Ponder but that isn't even likely. And Green would be a waste of a first round pick, drafting a WR when we are in the situation that we're in is the fast path to mediocrity.

Not only is it pointless from a football standpoint to take a 2nd first-round WR when you don't even have a QB to throw to him, but it also makes no sense from a financial standpoint. No team in the league wants to pay 2 elite WRs. Look at the Cardinals. They had to trade away Boldin because they couldn't afford to pay him and Fitzgerald. You just can't tie up that much money at the WR position.

People really need to stop talking about the Titans taking AJ Green or Julio Jones. It isn't happening. 0% chance.

There's always a chance, but it would be a terrible move. Like Cruds said. It's putting the cart before the horse. We don't even have a horse.
