I was referring to how we need to draft a player that can make an impact instead of taking someone to sit on the bench for a year. A dominant defensive tackle (which is an area of need) can create pressure and collapse a pocket. Normally, it doesn't take 6 years to develop. Look at Suh from last year. He came in and made an impact right away. The last time we had a dominant DT was the last time we had a winning season and yes, Haynesworth was that player.

You were the one who made the jump in assuming that if it took Albert 6 years to develop it would take other DT's the same amount of time.

I agree with you on your grading of QB's and not reaching. I think the Rodgers/Smith comparison is an interesting one though. Rodgers has ghis SB ring and things are looking rosey, Smith is heading the opposite direction, but how much of that is down to their ultimate potential or how they have been developed? I think a lot more than what number they were drafted.

GB had the luxury to develop Rodgers over a long period of time giving him all the tools he needed to succeed (not to mention the debate about the risk of handing the reins over to him from Favre just before his contract was near its end). Smith, on the other hand was thrown in at the deep end, left open to a beating by a failing O-line and had change after change at OC, he was set up to fail from the start.

How we develop our future franchise QB is perhaps almost as important as where we draft. OFC Luck next year would be nice too.

If I remember correctly, many factors go into the grade the Titans generate. One is based on need though I have no idea how much it weighs into it.

I hope it doesn't weigh in so much that the Titans allow it to overshadow the rest of their data. I hate to keep piling on Chris Henry but he's a great example.

I'm no scout but it wasn't hard to see even in his highlight reel he had little vision. He wasn't productive. There was little there to make you think this guy was worth more than a fourth except his combine numbers.

In his case, the Titans allowed those combine numbers to trump everything else.

I think I'm missing something with this Henry stuff because I just don't see how the example is relevant at all. They gave him the wrong grade. It's that simple. No matter what position the Titans take, they need to get the grading right or it could turn out to be a bad pick.

Are you arguing that the Titans should draft solely on grade and little/no regard to need? If so, Henry is an example of how that can go very wrong.

Or are you arguing that some QB's Combine performance is going to make the Titans fall in love? I don't think anyone has really said that and I don't think anyone believes it.

What I am saying is that if the Titans are on the clock at 8 and trying to decide between a DE who they give a top-10 grade to and a QB who they give a top-15 grade to, I might still take the QB because it's such a vital position and you rarely are in a position to draft a QB that high.

If you think a player can be a franchise QB and you don't have one on your roster, you never pass up the chance to take him.

I'm saying need is worked into the grade. What I am hoping is that it doesn't skew the data so much the Titans reach. The example of Henry was used because the Titans allowed one component (the combine) to trump everything else, IMO.

Maybe. But if that top-15 grade has need built into it, then it has already somewhat inflated that grade. To what amount, we can't know.

I can't argue with any of that, except to reiterate what I have already said and say that I think a small reach is acceptable because getting a QB is so, so important.

I wouldn't be upset if the Titans passed on an A+ cornerback for an A quarterback. One of those positions is way, way more important than the other.

And this is where those who don't want to draft a QB in the 1st differ from you. The majority of us that would prefer drafting a QB in the 2nd..is because we personally don't see any of these QBs as a top 15 pick..or close to that. I agree that if you have a dire need..and you have a guy whose grade is in close range.then ok. But I dont see any of these guys even being in range where we should take that risk...and reach for a guy

Pretty much every scout sees at least one, I'd assume.

If there were truly no QBs worthy of being taken in the first, only a few would be, at most. But people are talking as if there may be 4 or 5 QBs off the board in rd. 1. Someone in a high place, much higher than ours, believes that there are some future franchise QBs to be had in this year's first round.

All of these players could be future All-Pros, or all busts. You can never tell before the draft. Most people thought Leinart was more NFL ready than Vince or Cutler.
