That was the same logic the Dolphins used when they passed on Ryan. They got a great player in Long but how has that helped them?

In that draft there really wasn't a standout sure thing franchise QB in the Manning like category but Ryan was by far the best. The top guys were Ryan, Henne, Flacco and Brohm.

Incidently Henne was a four year starter for Michigan with decent size, a strong arm and played in a pro style offense. I'm guessing the Fins really thought they had the right combination.

The real question is what QBs do the Titans have, or will have a "good feeling" about? If one fo those guys is sitting there when we pick they better take the guy. Now it is certainly possible they don't have a good feeling on any QB available when they pick so I'm fine with not reaching if that is the case. But don't pass on a guy if you like him. Even if you get the next Freeney with the pick the team will be like the Colts with Freeney but without Manning.

Ask any Dolphin fan you know about drafting a QB in rd 2. They did it in back to back years with Beck in 2007 and Henne in 2008. Beck was a total bust and Henne is just a good backup caliber guy.

Fact:Only one rd 2 QB drafted since 1995 has become a star. Drew Brees. That's one 1 of 16 from 95-2008.

Fact: Only 5 of the 16 QBs taken in rd 2 from 95-2008 have even been decent backups or part time starts. Brees-Kolb-Shaun King-Jake Plummer-Charlie Batch.

The next best QB after those 5 is Tony Banks.

Also interesting to note that in 5 of those drafts no team took a QB in rd 2. Once a guy gets passed by every team in rd 1 the reason he was passed can often keep him on the board until rd4 or later.

The best example of drafting a Qb in rd 2 is Brian Brohm who for much of the draft process was considered a sure 1st rd pick and comparable as a prospect to Ryan. Then he began to fall and the packers got him late in rd 2. The concerns about him were valid.

You're data is skewed. First round QBs are given more opportunities because teams invested more in them (high draft pick, money, etc.). Do you honestly think VY would have stayed on this team for 5 years had he been drafted in the second round? Stupid misconception that needs to stop spreading.

Nice post....Dolphins waited on a Qb, Falcons took Matt Ryan, both franchises are going in opposite directions now. You do not wait if a franchise QB is there.

I don't think any of the QB's will be able to start from day 1. With us having a pick as high as 8, we need to take a player that can come in and contribute immediately. If we're going to make our rookie QB sit out a year anyway, I'd rather wait until next year to draft one of the QB's coming out then, because there will be 3 of them that can start opening day. And any of those 3 would be the #1 QB in this draft, if you're make comparisons.

I've seen a couple of mock drafts lately that have Fairley falling to us. He's dropped a little bit because he wasn't as big as they thought he was. He would obviously be the BPA at 8 and I don't see how we pass him up. Remember the last time we had a DT that put pressure on the QB and could collapse the pocket? That was '08 and we went 13-3. If we could just get a serviceable vet to hold us over until next year when we can get a true franchise guy, instead of forcing the pick this year, it might be the way to go.

your post makes a little sense, but...what about qb's drafted after the 2nd round?...that means teams passed on them twice assuming they didnt have the need or thought they sucked

alot of those guys are starters in the NFL and some have won superbowls

i think alot has to do with coaching....prime example is Rodgers, is sat how many years, behind brett favre but still......and when it was his time, he was ready.....you cant throw these young guys to the wolves and expect to be great

i say get vet QB for next 2 years to atleast carry the team, draft qb either 1 or 2.....by year 3 we have our "franchise" qb

In quite a long time? Try in 11 months.... Last year there were a total of 55 defensive linemen taken in the draft, that is more than in any draft over the past 10 years. And as far as getting a good defensive lineman in later rounds, I wouldn't count on it. Only once can I think of a draft that's generated tons of talent on the D-Line after round 1, and that goes back to 2001. Since 2001 you have; Kampman (5th), Umenyiora (2nd), Dockett (3rd), and Tuck (3rd) as productive defensive linemen. It's too early to say the 2nd & 3rd round players from 2007 til now won't pan out, but who are you thinking slides to the 2nd round, Stephen Paea?

Here's how I expect our draft to go:
    1.)QB
    2.)DL
    3.)Safety

    Or
    1.)DL
    2.)QB
    3.)Saftey

If we draft a safety before the 3rd round, it will be a tragedy.

That's a pretty huge assumption you are making there.

that's an excellent point... I think it's unwise to send an 8th round pick on someone that's going to be sitting on the bench.... we need someone that can start right away... that's why the worse teams get the higher picks... so it's fair to the entire and they have their choice in players that they believe can play right away
