I agree Babin had one good year and if he expects more than 4 mil a year he should walk. I disagree Tully is a top 5 MLB but losing him would make our already weak LB core worse. I think McGrath will be good in time and part of it is our D-Line having no responsibility other than pass rush but they didn't play well last year like the rest of our team. Spoon is average and Tully is above average but he is our leader and we should try to keep him unless Curran can move to MLB.

Kiwanuka or Edwards would be an awesome FA signing and would give us more flexibility in the draft. I hope we sign Ford either way and let Ball walk.

Five ILB's better than Tulloch? Ray Lewis, Patrick Willis, Jon Beason, Bart Scott, and Jerod Mayo. Now while I was putting this list together I was thinking you were vastly overrating Tully, but I named all 3-4 linebackers, and when going through the list of 4-3 linebackers, it became apparent that there isn't that many good ones. Sooo yeah sign me up for franchising Tulloch, if we can't sign him to a longterm deal.

Oh and Babin is a old, mediocre, idiot that has had one pretty good year in his entire career, give me a 7th round pick over him. Hell take someone from the CFL over him.

The cap number is for all linebackers. Is he a top 5 linebacker? Among all linebackers? No. Not even top 15.

I would call him a top 10 MLB or ILB and that is worth a similar contract to what Tony Brown got about $5M a year.

The only financial benefit for the team to tag him is that the $10M is spread out over a year in salary and he would be motivated to play well.

He just turned 26 why not try to do a deal that keeps him around for 4 years?

We got Babin for $1M, his 12.5 sacks have earned him 4-5X that. Realistically he is probably good for half that many sacks this year but that is still worth a one year $4-5M deal. If he dogs it and gets only 3-4 sacks we have not lost that much and we just don't bother signing him again.

Regarding Wash and the D-line i think Rocker will be fine for us. We have several D-linemen not playing up to par with Wash coaching them so it's not like the guy is the god of coaching.

Wash couldn't squeeze solid production from Ford, Hayes or Haye and Marks while showing some progress was hardly outstanding. Wash was good with underachieving vets like Babin but he never did anything all that special with our young guys he had from the beginning.

lol thats what i was realizing too and thats what i was gonna say speaking in terms of 4-3 linebackers he is easily top 5 and sure in the top overall linbackers hes not up there but half them people you also will list above him overall; how many of them were good last year barring there d-line was not good or injured like ours....

Beason is a 4-3 MIKE, and he's the premier player in the league at that spot, which gives us an idea about the level of play that is considered the elite tier. So when you compare that to Tully, I think we can all see the disparity. (None of this is to disagree with your post, aside from the Beason thing)

    [semirelatedtangentthathasthetendencytospiralonitself]

But, Tully is still a starting caliber MIKE. He's versatile, and he's durable. I think that absolutely makes him worth bringing back, either through re-signing or tagging. For me, you don't tag a guy because he is or isn't Top 5 at his position. I know he'll be making that level of money, but he makes that money at expense of a longterm deal, which is an expense not many veterans would want to pay. So tagging a guy isn't truly awarding a guy like he's a Top 5 player, because Top 5 players make this in a year and have the luxury of having another 3-4 years left on their contract - Franchise players don't. It's a bitter sweet thing, and for both sides. Teams use the tag because the player is hitting FA (duh), is difficult to re-sign (for whatever reason), and the player is too valuable to lose so paying that big amount is worth it. It's an ace in the hole in my view for team management.

Whether or not Tully, or Babin for that matter, are replaceable is (easily) debateable. I think they both shouldn't be difficult re-signs. I do know that if we lose either, he'll have to be replaced through the draft or FA. The draft is for the future impact, and both Tully and Babin are starters, which means we'd have to nail two immediate impact players to replace them, which is far from a guarantee even if we use our first two picks on them. FA is the immediate impact route, but do we want to gamble on another team's action of letting a guy go in hopes that he chooses to sign here, despite a brand new coach and uncertainty?

If we were a good team, we'd probably let these guys walk. But we aren't. We have a bunch of areas that need to be fixed as it is, and this is pre-FA. Now, it'll be largely up to Jerry Gray and whether Tully and Babin fit his scheme, but I think it's wise to keep these guys that we know contributed last year, rather than opening up more holes to fill through the draft or gamble on bringing in through FA.

But this is all mute if obvious improvements are on the FA market and require similar contracts that Tully and Babin do, soooo...
