Honestly the way this QB class is I wouldn't mind drafting two. In the 2nd go with Ponder/Kaepernick/Mallett and then in the late round McElroy/Devlin/Stanzi

So in camp the competition would be:

    Collins
    2nd
    Smith
    5th-7th
    FA

One goes to PS and cut the other.

I know that sounds weird but with all the uncertainty in this class it wouldn't be a bad idea having a couple and seeing who is actually better.

    2nd:
Kaepernick- No one really knows what you're going to get. He's a "project" with a big arm and some running ability. May take a couple years but put him behind a decent QB and he could be our future starter.

Ponder- One of the smartest QB's in the class (McElroy the smartest imo) but the problem is he doesn't have that strong of an arm plus shoulder surgery. If he can be a great decision maker and throw the ball accurate instead of trying to throw hard he could be a solid starter.

Mallett- Yes he has off the field issues but on the field he has a very good deep ball, some physical tools, and put up some nice stats. Problem is he's not the smartest of the bunch and doesn't do well under pressure.

Later rounds I would take McElroy.

To me Ponder and McElroy are about the same type of QB except Ponder is a bit more talented. We can go with Ponder, take the high risk/high reward Kaepernick, or the big arm Mallett.

    My ranking...

    1. Ponder
    2. Kaepernick
    3. Mallett

I like your thinking. Having an extra QB for insurance wouldn't be a bad thing, but don't forget we still have Rusty. Though he had a poor showing against the Texans he had no Britt, no time to get the offense in a groove because the defense couldn't get off the field. He had 3 or 4 dropped passes that killed drives (thanks 12-Gage). I think we should at least give him one more year to turn into something, but definitely not to be the #1 guy.

Here is how I rank the QBs that could be available in round 2, and I would rather take any of these guys in round 2 over Gabbert or Newton in the first.

1a. Locker- needs to work on his accuracy and pocket presence, intangibles have been compared to Tebow's, + arm strength, + mobility, throws very accurately on the run, + work ethic. Watching him he seems to make the hard throws look easy, and the easy throws look hard... He said in an interview that scouts and NFL personnel at the Senior Bowl told him his accuracy issues were caused by his feet and that he is working on it. He is the type that may could come in and learn behind a vet for 2 years, getting taught proper technique by a NFL QB coach and become a stud. If the light comes on, he could be Aaron Rodgers, if it doesn't he's closer to Alex Smith. In the 2nd round it is worth the risk...

1b. Christian Ponder- very smart, accurate, mobile, can go through progressions, again, from what you read from scouts and personnel people, he has a +work ethic. Negatives with Ponder are health and arm strength. To me he is the safest QB in this draft, reminds me of a more mobile Chad Pennington with a better arm....

    3. Ryan Mallett- some character concerns have been rumored, cocaine use being the major one, but none have been proven, on the field, his accuracy needs work and he is not very mobile. He has the strongest arm in this draft, can go through progressions, probably has the best pocket presence of the 2nd round QBs, he showed remarkable growth between his 1st and 2nd years at Arkansas, improving his completion % from 55 to 64. This guy could end up anywhere from Phillip Rivers to Ryan Leaf....right now he reminds me more of Joe Flacco....

    4. Colin Kaepernick- a major wildcard because he needs more work then any QB on this list. He has an incredibly strong arm, very mobile, but played in a pistol offense in college so he is not used to reading defenses or dropping back from center. He had a great showing the entire week of the Senior Bowl, showing improved accuracy, and an ability to keep his eyes downfield when he throws. Mayock commented numerous times during practice that he would love to be able to work with this kid because his potential is so high. Scouts have said he is like Vince Young with a better attitude. Like most guys on this list, he is a 2-3 year project...

This list will be very fluid between now and April....The only QB in the draft I can guarantee you my mind doesn't change on is Cam Newton in round 1. I absolutely do not want any part of him there...

That actually is a pretty good idea. I'm torn between not drafting a singe QB to drafting two now. The problem is the QB's have so many holes you'd almost have to draft multiple QBs to cover your bases. We should be getting a comp pick or two, I'm guessing a 5th. Kaepernick and Newton seem like major projects and we don't have the luxury of waiting two or three years for one of them to possibly develop. I really want us to draft McElroy but as for the other not in the first two rounds.

No offense to you guys, but there is absolutely no way Mallet is there in the second round, even with the off field issues. The man has thrown 60 td's the past two years combined and that was against the SEC!! His pocket presence and NFL calibur arm pretty much insures he will be drafted in the first. Now dont get me wrong, I would absolutely love to take him in the second, but I will by no means fantasize about him being there. That is just unrealistic. YOu can pretty much gaurantee atleast 2 to 3 QB's will be taken in the first.
