He obviously made some difference because they won WITH him when they couldn't win it without him. If Dungy deserves credit for that Superbowl then Gruden deserves credit for Oakland being in the Superbowl that year.

    From the Tennessean:

Ex-star, longtime assistant coach Mike Munchak is the early favorite as the Titans next coach, in large part because of owner Bud Adams' love of Oiler glory days.

    Glory Days? hehe haha hoho

Been rooting for this franchise since 1973 - "Glory Days" is a bit of a stretch.

He won because he was defending against the very offense that he himself designed immediately before taking the TB job. The TB defense said themselves that the game played out exactly as Gruden said it would in the walkthrough. Had it been any other opponent from the AFC, the outcome could have been wildly different.

Seems like Gruden made a HUGE difference in the Bucs winning the Superbowl then. :thumb:

Yes, but only under the condition of coincidence. What are the chances of that happening again, and why would anyone use it as justification of great coaching?

BUT: I'll give you that he gets credit for turning Gannon into a completion machine. Hasn't done it since, though.

Turned the Raiders into a playoff team. 2000 Raiders shutout the Dolphins and lost in the AFC Championship to the eventual Superbowl champion Ravens. 2001 Raiders beat the Jets and then lost to the Patriots from the "tuck" rule.

Went to Tampa and immediately won a Superbowl. If you don't want to give him credit for the Superbowl win, how about give him credit for the win against the 49ers and more impressively the win on the road against the Eagles in their last game at the vet. Yeah, Tampa's D was made them a great team but Gruden's free agent additions did help their O.

Two bad years follow, but consider he was slightly handicapped in the draft because of the picks traded to bring him to Tampa.

He then built a different Tampa team. 11-5 won the division in 2005, bad year in 2006, 9-7 won the division in 2007, 9-7 missed the playoffs in 2008.

Yeah he built a better team in Oakland, but he still had 4 out of 7 winning seasons in Tampa.

No HC has ever won a Super Bowl with a second team so it's not a given that the "name guys" would make a difference in that dept. But there is the argument for a complete redirection with the franchise. A big plus in a Gruden / Cowher hire is the FA's that would want to come here simply because of who the coach is...

If Munch were to be a clone of Fisher, I'd be against it. But you look at a number of teams out there who had a coach replaced by someone from the inside and I'm not seeing a trend. If anything, the new coach wants to set himself apart.

Just this past season: Phillips/Garrett and Childress/Frazier. Same systems. Different results. Of course, time will tell but it doesn't take an entire overhaul of the schemes to create a lot of change.

    "Not aggressive enough."
    "Can't/won't adjust."
    "Too loyal to vets."

These are the three top criticisms I heard of Fisher around here. I don't see why anyone would think Munch would necessarily take the same approach just because he coached under Fisher.

I don't mind a fresh start with someone totally new but that poses a number of risks as well.

Big difference. Neither were replacing a long tenured coach, both were considered future head coaches and gathered interest from other teams, both were at different teams before the one's they coach now, and neither have proven that they will be a great coach anyway.
