Running backs are a dime a dozen and great ones can be picked anywhere from the middle of the first round through the third round on a regular basis. Here's a look at all the pro-bowl RBs:

    Jamaal Charles - NFL Draft: 2008 / Round: 3 / Pick: 73
    MJD - NFL Draft: 2006 / Round: 2 / Pick: 60
Arian Foster - Undrafted in 2009
    CJ - NFL Draft: 2008 / Round: 1 / Pick: 24
    Michael Turner - NFL Draft: 2004 / Round: 5 / Pick: 154
    AP - NFL Draft: 2007 / Round: 1 / Pick: 7
    Steven Jackson - NFL Draft: 2004 / Round: 1 / Pick: 24

On average, pick position is #57 (excluding Arian Foster who was undrafted).

If you look at QBs, its slightly different:

    Mike Vick - 1st Overall
    Matt Ryan - 3rd Overall
    Drew Brees - 32nd Overall
Tom Brady - 199th Overall (Massive exception)
    Philip Rivers - 4th Overall
    Peyton Manning - 1st Overall

Including Brady, pick position is #40.
Excluding Brady (like I excluded Foster), pick position is #8.2.

A QB's value in this league FAR exceeds an RB's value for many reasons. Its a lot more reasonable for someone to give up 2 first round picks for a QB that has the potential to lead their team for the next decade than for an RB like CJ whose career could be done in a few years. A good QB also brings a lot more to a team than a good RB.

I honestly don't think we can get a single first round pick for CJ at this point.

Poor C.J., getting run to death over here with Fisher. Dude could be on Jupiter in terms of stats, but Fisher holds him back with these runs.

What's crazy is that only half of these players are playing for the team they were drafted to.
    Yes, even Philip Rivers.

Interesting thought. To an extent, it proves that coaching and adapting your system to fit your QB (or finding a QB that fits your system) is pretty damn important.

Mike Vick is an exception here though, he probably would have played the rest of his career in Atlanta if he didn't go to jail.
