I thought it was worth noting that today's match-up with the Chargers marks the renewal of one of the franchise's oldest rivalries. The Houston Oilers defeated the Chargers in the first two AFL title games which of course resulted in a fierce competition between the two clubs in the ensuing years. Both team were the leading examples of the high powered offensive football the AFL tried to offer as an option to the "three yards and a cloud of dust" football featured in the rival NFL.

Most of us** weren't around to witness the Oilers early success (even me) and given the change of cities and names it's easy to feel pretty disassociated with those teams. I'm not going to lie and say that I'm going to get any more fired up playing the Chargers because of this "ancient" history (I'm pretty fired up about gaining some success against the Chargers because of much more recent history), but I think it is a history worth noting on a day like today.





What it's all about... pretty sweet, but in serious need of updating.


** - note... I'm pretty sure Rolltide listened to the 1960 Oilers games on the radio and pounded out his often confrontationally worded, but well thought out and insightful opinions on coach Lou Rymkus and the rest of the club. Living in a rural area, Tide was starved for an audience and often forced his disinterested siblings to listen to him read his carefully worded diatribes. Family friend and neighbor Doris Daspider recalls Rolltide chasing his youngest sister through the fields yelling "He's not over rated. I don't care about stats Billy Cannon is a dynamic player and has a huge effect on the Oilers passing game!"... of course the confused two year old sister had no response... much to RT's dismay and delight

 

Random thought... but the Jets offense looks absolutely putrid.

Ajirotutu and Crayton starting at receiver? If we ever wanna get this monkey off our back today's the day.

 

Their WR's are horrible. Floyd and Naanee are out? I think this is the day we take the crown.

 

Chris Johnson's moms b-day, wasn't it Kenny Britt's moms b-day last week?...

 

We have been very fortunate over the past season and a half about playing teams when they are missing key parts. (Warner last year, Big Ben this year, today).

 

Justin Gage a healthy scratch. Anyone else going to complain about Britt not being our number one now?
