The Foxsports link provides less information than the USA Today link. You can search the salary database on USA in a number of ways- including what you have described above. Select what you are interested in up top. I have no reason to doubt the credibility of USA Today's database. They are a respected media outlet. Foxsports database shows 2009 Titans payroll at #12, USA shows it at #14. That isn't much of a difference in my book but you can search deeper if you need to see the difference. I couldn't find an access to FoxSports other years salaries data.

And to address your point- I didn't just reference the years topped the league in dead money. I referenced the entire accesible 10 year period. In fact, the source I have used was provided to me by someone to demonstrate that the Titans are near the top of the league in payroll. Unfortunately, the database only demonstrated that one year (#7) in 2008.

Like it or not, the Titans reputation for "not paying their players" will only likely increase as this situation remains unaddressed by the FO.

It does NOT include prorated bonuses or dead cap money, River, beyond the year it was originally paid.

Here's the USA Today overview of their salary numbers:
    http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/default.aspx?loc=interstitialskip

"Starting with the 2001 season, signing bonuses are listed in entirety only for the year the contract was signed. In prior years, the bonus is pro-rated over the life of the contract. As a result, a player's total salary can fluctuate extensively from one year to the next."

All I am saying is that the Titans had a ton of pro-rated money against the cap in deals made prior to 2000. That is why the Titans had to continuously restructure, etc. to get under the cap up to the big purge in '05.

Since a team can only spend to what the cap allows, that tells me the Titans paid as much to their team as the league allowed during that entire stretch.

    http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/default.aspx

USA TODAY's football salaries database contains year-by-year listings of salaries for National Football League players, from the 2000 season through the current season. The search options here allow you to see salaries and bonuses for specific players, plus median and total salaries for each team.

The data are based on USA TODAY research, information from player agents and NFL Players Association research documents.

For each player, the database shows his base salary, signing bonus, other bonuses and cap value. The base salary is the value according to his contract; however, contracts are not guaranteed and he may not have received the entire amount. The column labeled "salary" is the actual amount he received in base salary and bonuses combined.

Starting with the 2001 season, signing bonuses are listed in entirety only for the year the contract was signed. In prior years, the bonus is pro-rated over the life of the contract. As a result, a player's total salary can fluctuate extensively from one year to the next.

The cap value represents the player's pro-rated signing bonus, plus salary and other bonuses for the season.

Total team payrolls can also fluctuate significantly from year to year, depending on how a team accounts for its players’ base salaries, bonuses, etc. Salaries are not necessarily obtained at the same time in the season each year.

Proves what TJ? The data is inclusive of signing bonuses the year the contract was signed. Over ten years, just how do suppose that bonus, cap etc disappears or isn't reflected in the data? I've referenced the entire available data base, not just one year like you and pyschop have suggested We've never been higher than #7 (barely top quarter) and the majority of the other years we were in or at the bottom 1/3.

And don't forget- this isn't just me you need to discredit. This is Faulk and apparently his peers that state the Titans organization are "known not to pay their players". I realize this is a bitter pill for some Titan's fans to swallow but frankly the REPUTATION is what it is. The USA Today data source is valid and credible. If you feel otherwise, then prove it.

Because they spend "up to the cap" less than 19 other teams TJ. Give me a break. Stop the BS.

It is only there the year it is paid, River. "Prorated" mean something which is spread out. As you posted, this data does not do that but counts the bonus on on the year given.

This data also does not show dead money since the only difference in it and prorated money is that the player not longer is on the team.

From 2000-'05, the Titans had a ton of prorated and dead money from seasons prior to 2000. That's why they had to continue to restructure players or pay out dead money during that time in order to get under the cap.

What you need to be asking yourself during that stretch of time is how a team can be ranked #25 in salary yet be only a few thousand short of the cap. Call that mismanagement if you want but it existed.

This is why I say you can't really get a lot of insight from that data until '06 when the bulk of that dead money is off the books. Want to know how the Titans pay? Look at '06-'09.

First of all, I don't give a rat's arse what Faulk says. He has no general manager experience. He apparently doesn't understand the 30% rule. And are we surprised he'd side with a fellow RB on this?

What peers? Let's get those names out here. I bet they are mental giants like Warren Sapp.

It's credible if you understand it in context with the cap. And, as I've repeatedly done, have proved it to you with a number of sources. Did you even bother to read any of those articles which discuss how tight the Titans were to the cap limit from 2000-'05? Have you wiped your memory clean of that entire time period?

What is BS is you don't bother to understand the impact of the salary cap and how it played a role in this. That's like looking at a QB's total passing yards but not bothering to look at passer rating, INTs, completion percentage, etc. in evaluating a QB.

Re-read the prior post with the blue color. The data shows what has been paid TJ. (The year the contract was signed- in its entirety) The cap has little or nothing to do with what is actually paid. Guaranteed money which is prorated will be paid by the organization.

This data source does not reflect the cap effects. Nobody has said the Titans don't pay or suffer from the cap effects. The tenet is that the Titans "don't pay their players".

I understand the data correctly. The "context of the cap" has nothing to do with what ACTUALLY HAS BEEN PAID. Stop trying to work in the idea of pro-ration and cap effects. It isn't relevant in WHAT HAS BEEN PAID. Bonuses ARE included. And all of the same "pro-ration and dead cap" mechanisms that you suggest de-value the interpretation of the data EFFECT EVERY OTHER TEAM to which the Titans are being compared.

So please stop suggesting the data somehow does not accurately reflect how what the Titans actually paid AS COMPARED to the other teams. What you keep suggesting just doesn't address the thread topic.

You have to add that Titans don't pay state income taxes on games played here...

Poor underpaid Titans, hopefully they'll receive assistance with the economic recovery act...

It's pretty stupid to suggest the Titans were cheap from 2000-'05 when they were up against the cap each of those seasons making it impossible to pay more.

It sounds like your beef is the situation in which led to the Titans being so cap-strapped.

Not to mention over the last three years they have renewed or extended contracts for close to $200M on:

    Ahmard Hall
    Justin Gage
    Bo Scaife
    Michael Roos
    David Stewart
    Eugene Amano
    Tony Brown
    Cortland Finnegan
    Vincent Fuller
    Rob Bironas
    Kerry Collins

(There is actually more, but I didn't want to water down the post with the Nickey's and Amato's of the world.)

Conversely, they didn't do the same for these guys:

    Travis Henry
    Colby Bockwoldt
    Bobby Wade
    Zach Piller
    Robaire Smith
    Drew Bennett
    Chris Brown
    Ben Hartsock
    Ben Troupe
    Eric Moulds
    Jacob Bell
    Travis LaBoy
    Antwan Odom
    Randy Starks
    Brandon Jones
    Justin McCareins
    Daniel Loper
    Albert Haynesworth
    Chris Carr
    Eric King

Aside from Starks, most of the rest have not played up to their contract with their new teams or haven't even made a new team. And yes, I think we should've ponied up extra for Carr and at least told him he could compete for a starting spot and kept franchising AH, but it's not like there is a bad batting % here by the FO.

Not my beef- Faulk's and his peers. I've explained my "beef" numerous other posts. The Titans reputation continues to grow outside of my "beef".

The data says our payroll ranked :

    2006- #25
    2007- #25
    2008- #7
    2009- #15

So it is erroneous to state I have suggested the Titans were cheap only from 2000-05.

But that aside, I understand folks really just want to look at 2008 when we extended some key players. I mean even though the data reflects WHAT WAS ACTUALLY PAID, it is irrelevant because we all know the Titans are the best run and most player supportive organization in the league. And it is just absurd to suggest otherwise. :)

Considering where the Titans finished many of those years, THEY WERE OVERPAID!!
