It's all about the bonus, IMO.

I was thinking today that the Titans could do the 30% base and give him $15-20 mil if he was willing to add another year onto his contract but I don't think he's interested in anything less than $50 mil or more.

It's a mess. If CJ has any kind of decent agent representation, he's got to know his options will be limited. If he holds out, he doesn't even get paid the $550,000 and runs the risk of not getting anything in '11.

CJ's just SOL on this one. I agree he deserves to be paid more for out-performing his contract but he's limited by the 30% rule. I think the smart thing for him to do is still come to work and show the organization he's worth his asking price.

    Got it TJ.

The data is listed as total payroll. You and others explained the lower total payroll was due to "dead cap space"- not me. I just pointed out that this data is "total payroll" and that over ten years ANY prorated effects would be reflected. It still reflects that we are in the lower half most of the years and only once in that period did we crack the top ten.

There really is nothing to be frustrated about. It is quite simple.

It's quite simple if you understand that you are not seeing pro-rated bonuses previously paid here.

Last season, Jovan Haye signed a four-year, $15.2 mil deal. According to the FoxSports salary data for '09 (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/team/tennessee-titans/salary/67047), he was paid $7 mil last season. That's because the Titans paid his full signing bonus when he agreed to terms. From a cap standpoint, I bet his counted maybe $2.5 to 3 mil in '09.

Here's another for you to ponder, how can a team who spends to the cap as the Titans did up to '05 be ranked #20 or more in salary paid if the pro-rated bonuses are included in these stats?

True, but they kept Ray Ray and I don't remember a major public issue developed over how they did not re-sign players.

And as much as I hate him, Ray Lewis is "Elite".

total payroll means total payroll. There are some years where the total payroll exceeds the cap limit for those years. That includes prorated bonuses and dead cap. And the Titans still were in the lower 1/3 for most of the past ten years in total payroll.

I don't like making the Titans look bad despite what some think. But I don't like BS even worse. The fact is that people were touting the Titans were among the top teams in payroll. I challenged that WITH THE VERY STATS that people were referencing. Turns out it was one year in the past ten we were in the upper quarter (barely) at #7. The majority of the other years we were in the bottom half. Now the "deferred/prorated bonus" BS starts up. The data referenced includes that as well. Still the Titans in the bottom half most of the time.

Look-enough with the BS. This all started because Faulk, who personally I think has more experience in these type affairs than you or I, has stated that our organization is "known not to pay their players" and alluded that he peers believe the same to be true. I believe the data supports Faulk's statement.

I'm all for defending the organization and the morale of this board, but a spade is a spade. I dont' even find it offensive that we don't pay as much as other teams. I wish our FO and coaches ran things more like the Colts/Pats/Ravens. My criticism has been that we don't take advantage of opportunities in FA to land (and often don't retain) proven vets because of the expense. I can't stand the BS that is touted on this board that going after one or two "premium" FA's will put us in cap hell again. It just isn't true. I'm annoyed we spend our money on mediocre FA's for depth and retain them even when they don't produce. It is no surprise to me that we (this organization) have (has)n't got over the hump. It isn't just "bad luck".

Like it or not- this organization has a reputation of being cheap among commentators as well as active and former players. That reputation didn't create itself.

Pretty sure there was a bit of a dispute with him recently. But regardless of that, if Haynesworth had Lewis's work ethic and dedication, I am pretty sure Haynesworth would have been signed.

That's the thing...when a RB has THAT many carries/yards in one season, the following season is usually a major let-down. There are anamolies...LT, Dickerson...but most 2k rushers either suffer nagging injuries, or just show too much wear from the previous season.

First thing, I didn't even know USA Today kept track of payroll. If you follow the link TJ posted, you might find a discrepancy between where the Titans rank in payroll according to USA Today and where Fox Sports ranks them. Fox Sports also shows the money paid to each individual player on the 53 man roster while listing where each team ranks in salary.

Also not a fan of BS, and using years the Titans topped the league in dead money (money not paid to players that year but still limiting the team against the cap) to criticize the team is BS. I'm sincerely not trying to be a here, but maybe it would clear things up if you did some research on the cap. I posted a link earlier in this thread that has a lot of good information.

Back to topic... I posted something about roster bonuses earlier in this thread. After doing more reading, I realized that nothing has been said about the 30 percent rule's effect on roster bonuses. At least nothing I've read. Has anyone read or heard anything about it? If the 30 percent rule treats roster bonuses the same way it treats signing bonuses, then the thirty percent rule isn't a good excuse for this deal not getting done. It was my understanding that the 30 percent rule only affects base salary. Am I wrong?

Is performence-rated bonus included in the 30% rule?
If not, a solution was to give bonus if he reached 1000 yards, 200 carries, 3.0 ypc etc.
