The 2002 ravens had a major cap surge losing 6 starting defensive players and some key backups like Lionel Dalton.

I heard Mike Keith speak at a luncheon yesterday and he said that the only way to do it was a $40M or $50M signing bonus, all guaranteed. There are no opportunities for creating incentives or getting any of the $ back if he gets hurt. I like CJ as much as the next guy, but I'm not sure I would just hand him $50M this year, just to get it done. If the CBA gets back in tact, they could do a normal $50 - $60M deal over the next 5-6 year, and contrary to popular belief, the Titans have been known to reward and keep their core guys.

When you say Core, what do you mean? Looking ahead 2-3 season? 5-6? I like CJ just as much as the next guy, but who's to say he's not going to be another Ladanian Tomblinson or Shawn Alexander. MR knows this all to well. Do you think CJ will have any gas in the tank, or tread on the tires in 3 seasons? After 5 seasons or so, NFL running backs are generally considered over the hill

Why do people keep reiterating "if he gets hurt"? Other than when he was hunted by Ray Lewis, when has he been hurt? The dude is tough, and hits back. His style of play also factors in, he bounces and stiff arms guys. That's a safe way to run the ball, he isn't pushing into them like Larry Johnson and Steven Jackson do. He doesn't get hurt....

I think the Titans will give him a big fat contract extension after this season, when they can write up a normal contract with a signing bonus, base, and incentives.

I am in the camp of thinking they should do it as soon as possible, but CJ has stated, and even started a petition, to get a new contract now. The only way to do that is to give him his $50M or so in guaranteed money and the Titans, heck even the redskins, wouldn't do that.

I'm not going to pretend to have the breakdown of all this. I just remember players restructuring from 2000 to 2004 when the biggest purge occurred. That's when the Titans lost George, Mason, Rolle and Kearse.

I found this which sheds a little light on the way Reese had to restructure/release players in order to stay under the cap: http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1P1-51071784.html.

    Murphys Law, perhaps?

It's not "if", it's "when". The NFL is a violent league and Running Backs are disposable and they have to be, because they are often the smallest guy on the field and they are getting hit by guys much larger and stronger by them.

Remember that guy Jason Snelling in Atlanta. LOL, Atlantas RB gets hurt and they just plug in some random nobody and he runs all over a team.

Besides, Whos to say CJ can still run 4.24 in 3 seasons. If CJ ran 4.6, he's a nobody in this league.

^Fair points, but the likeliness of him getting hurt is minimal. I'd feel better giving C.J. a RB the money than anyone else on our roster. Everyone will at some point get hurt, that's probably 100% true. However he doesn't. His style will continue to keep him on the field. He's 2 for 2 so far, and backtracking into college would better that stat. I just see the way he plays, and see nothing saying he will get hurt. Things Vince does worry me all night before games, same for Tony Brown even, but I have no worries that C.J. will ever not get right back up.

Maybe I'm brainfarting, but when have the Colts ever been active in early, big-name free agency? They just keep their own guys, like we do.

No worries that he will EVER not get back up?

Then you're living in a dream world. Injuries eventually happen to almost all players. If CJ's style of play resulted in fewer injuries, more people would emulate that style. Do you not remember the second Jags game when CJ ran for his longest TD? He got his bell rung. If that wasn't a concussion, it was remarkably close to it. We're lucky that he played the rest of the season. He takes hits, and, like every other player on the team, is likely to get hurt at some point or another.
