You don't get it there has to be proof based on the size of the players today. Are they smaller than 10 years ago? NOOOOOOOO!
I looked it up! Prove that players were bigger then. you can't and it's sad you never even want to try.

Finesse backs? The chargers traded up to get a big back even though they already had a so called finesse back. There is no trends teams draft guys they think can play.

Why is that stat meaningful at all?

Why do you keep bringing up the Ravens when eddie only played them 2 games a year?

When eddie began his career the ravens had a poor defense averaging 21st in total defense from 96-98. I guess we ignore those 6 games.

WTF he played the Browns and Bengals 2X every year and they sucked why don't you mention them.

FYI the Bengals finish in total defense 96-2000...25th, 28th, 28th, 25th, 22nd. Eddie played that team 14 times in his career.

The browns defenses that Eddie faced averaged 24th in total defense. The browns in 99 were 31st in total defense. Eddie played them 8 times!

Sorry, but anyone who uses "Kiki Barber" as an example isn't someone I'm about to waste time going back and forth with. What myself and reo are posting is based on what we see Sundays. If you watched the games you'd see what were saying is true. Best backs in football aren't the big guys. Brandon Jacobs is proof of that. And stop "looking stuff up", it only shows you know nothing more than whats in black and white. Like reo, I could careless if you agree or disagree, but the "prove it with stats" is not worthwhile because everyone here knows its true without having to dig into the stats archives of 10 years ago. Teams are getting away from smash mouth football. We just dealt our 'smash' to Seattle for beans. There is your proof.

How idiotic! The point was made that Eddie George did the work of 2-3 smaller backs. I gave you an example in Tiki barber of a 200 lb back who produced over a 10 year career and had 15,000 yards from scrimmage.

I'm sure in your deluded thinking Barber was a bust.

Warrick Dunn had almost 11,000 yards rushing and weighed 187 lbs.

Barry sanders played in the 1990s and he weighed about 200 lbs and had 15,000 yards.

    Pay attention to the arguments.

Right and every theory you have put up has been destroyed which suggests your powers of observation are poor.

If you want to say that defenses were bigger then prove it by comparing starting lineups then with now. Nobody even tried.

If you want to say the Titans offense was more one dimensional then prove it with facts. Nobody even tried.

If you want to say that there are certain trends in offense today different from back then than prove it with stats.

Sorry but i don't respect your gut reaction to things.

Why should i care enough if you agree w/ me or not to put the effort into looking up endless stats when I've already said that stats are misleading?

The sad part is that you'll spend an endless amount of time looking up stat after stat in order to find some that fit your agrument.

    I don't care that much.

Stats are misleading but making crap up because it seems so is not?

If a poster says that defenses were bigger 10 years ago i would assume he would come up with some data that shows that starting defenses were, hello, bigger. Heavier.

If a poster said that teams throw the ball much more today then 10-12 years ago i would assume he or she would go to pro football reference or pro football database and come up with the data that shows more prolific passing and more passes thrown per game.

If a poster claimed that the oilers-titan used to be much less of a passing team than today which allowed defenses to gang up on poor eddie i would expect data to support that.

To be anti-data is to be ignorant.

I actually went back over the last 4 decades and looked at the DE position based on sack numbers and averaged the top 20 for each year. ( 2009, 1999, 1989, 1979 ). The average weight in the (1979) was 263.54 lbs. The average for (1989) was 266.7 lbs. The average for (1999) was 271 lbs and the average for (2009) was 278lbs.

This looks like at least in the DE category the aveage has increased every decade. Please guys give it a rest. I know it is the off season but lets look at the numbers and have agood time discussing.

I'm not saying i'm anti-data or anti-stat or whatever. Stats don't tell the whole story. It takes more than quantitative analysis. You need ot combine it w/ qualitative analysis.

And I'm not saying the stats aren't out there. I'm saying, I don't care enough if you agree w/ me or not to put in the effort of finding them.

    You disagree? I don't care.

The DE position has been transforming over the past decade into a different technique in the now very popular 3-4 defense, where the DE's are NOT the passing rushing lb.'s like Harrison, ware, merriman etc. Instead they are, as far as size, in between that of de and a dt in a 4-3 scheme. Not agreeing or disagreeing with anybody, just saying the DE position has changed a ton and stats may be irrelevant on that subject.
