The average career of an NFL running back is 2.5 seasons. I like the strategy of loading up on running backs, incase something happens to CJ. CJ isn't going to get a big money, long term deal, because as big of a homerun hitter he may be, he is replaceable and running backs are dispensable, easily injured, and can't contribute past their prime.

i'd agree with you on most running backs, but i think there are 3 or 4 guys in the league who are special enough to warrant big money and aren't easily replaceable.

    chris johnson
    adrian peterson
    steven jackson

i also don't fault CJ for wanting a new contract, he's outperformed the one he has now. people will say, "he signed a contract and he should live with it." which is true, but organizations won't hesitate to rip up a deal because a player isn't performing.

i would not pay him........TN took the risk at drafting him and hit a homerun. Is Jamarcus Russle givine his money back to Oak for being a bust? The reverse of the CJ argument. Nope...............CJ will have to wait his turn...........but I do think TN should give him something in an uncapped yr...........to tie him over. But he needs to keep running and making his own case for dollars.

Problem is they can't just re-do his contract this year, and the Titans would be foolish to offer him a new deal right now with tens of millions in signing bonuses. Granted, his shelf life is short, but he signed a $12m deal as a rookie. Even though his salary is low, he's still making a small fortune in bonuses.

There is precedent to overpaying a RB.....Dickerson was no where near the back he was when he held out on the Rams and went to the Colts, Sean Alexander and Tomlinson are recent examples of getting paid for stellar seasons only to have your career tank afterwards.

If CJ is going to complain about the $12m deal he signed as a rook, and his agent can't keep him honorable or suggest something agreeable to both sides..........CYA!

I think this is why the NFL should go to performance based contract. You make X percentage more when your team wins, and you get incentives for hitting milestone personal stats.

This way, players who outperform their contract get equal compensation where as players like JaMarcus Russell would be more inclined to work his tail off to play and win, rather than live off the spoils of a $50,000,000.00 contract and be a 300+ lb out of shame SEC has been NFL never was

The typical life-span of an RB in the NFL is 2.5 years.

You're going in to your 3rd, CJ... better step off that high horse and get real. Accept the money you deserve and move on.

yet another reason why there needs to be a rookie salary scale. with a salary scale the rookies would be payed less initially, but would hit free agency faster and get payed the big money free agent contract sooner.

CJ isnt going to get what he wants so he better just show up to practice.

either Ringer, Stafon or Blount could be a 1,000 yard back. we dont need a 2,000 yard back to make the playoffs so Mr Cj better get his self in check.
