That's a great discussion TJ. I'm really tired of saying the same thing only to have you paraphrase what I've said incorrectly. Congrats- you've reached new heights in debate.

Thanks- I look forward to the Titans Super Bowl victory next year.

Do you think our current defense as a whole is superbowl caliber?

Is winning a superbowl next season realistic, or is that above reasonable expectations?

Personally, I think our defense is average to below average against the entire NFL, currently. If we upgrade the defense, and a special team returner, I feel like our superbowl shot looks a lot better for 2010.

Considering it's our one opportunity to really front load some contracts, it's disappointing to me. We've only done one contract that way with Amano, and its a good signing but it's only leaving us as strong as last season on the O-line, and it certainly wasn't a bargain except for the front-load aspect.

As far as the overpaid discussion, if you are discussing overpaid to their current production in a season, name one team that doesn't have "overpaid" and "underpaid" players on it. You pay for consistency.

How can you not want players like that?

The Eagles signed him 6 year, 56 million. Wish we'd have taken him for 6 year, 65 million. Should've structured, or re-structured, the contract to pay a big bonus this season to help with the future cap, assuming 2011 even happens.

Which I tend to think it will start with scab players!

    Ah...

You would have been the only one paying him $25mil this season. I don't know the contract but I would guess the guaranteed money isn't a signing bonus, but rather some signing bonus and some roster bonus to spread it out and mitigate some of their risk. If they gave him 22.5mil this season as a SB, you're right, you wouldn't have been the only. It's still a terrible idea. Overpay for a good player playing good...not a former good player who's been playing poorly.

Yes, we disagree on what value means. You value a guy based on what others are willing to pay for a level of performance, but to me it's all about performance in MY system vs his cost to the team. Players 'perform' at different levels in different systems/schemes so you can't judge them equally across all teams.

No, in my 'cost/benefit' analysis it's risk (cost in pick value/money/cap) vs reward (expected level of player performance). What model do you use to quantify risk? A veteran has different risk factors and more the way I look at it. A vet has more wear and tear, is older, and has greater injury risk. They also can have a lot of trouble adapting to a new scheme (what was Hershel Walker worth as a Cowboy vs his worth as a Viking). If you PAY for a certain level of expected performance and you get less than that, it's a problem. The greater the discrepancy, the bigger the problem. Vets cost a LOT more so they are riskier in getting the desired level of performance for their cost. And since vets are usually signed for longer than people reasonably expect they will maintain a level of performance (is Peppers gonna be worth that cap hit in year 5 or 6 of his contract?). If a 7th rnd pick doesn't workout, it really has NO cost because you can simply replace him with an undrafted free agent. But draft picks can also have a cost...as in the Titans constantly drafting 3rd rnd TE's who ride the bench...has little value later on which makes them a wasted resource.

Agents are not gonna bring their client on a trip to Nashville if the Titans aren't in the ballpark for the contract wanted. They will visit the highest suitor. It's easier to call and both sides know the team is either a serious contender or not.

Agreed. I think they should take MORE risk but not as much as you want. The only big contract I would allow the Titans to make if I was GM would be finding a way to pay Peppers big money when he has big time performance but with too many suitors offering big money, those aren't terms I could get in a bidding war.

No problem. And thank you for being able to discuss differing opinions without bashing me, misquoting me, making stuff up about me, or bashing me for my LONG posts:) I think we see where each other is coming from and agree the Titans need to be a bit more aggressive in going after free agents but we have different levels of desired risk.

Here's where the Titans SHOULD get aggressive. The Titans scheme relies so much on a front four pass rush and this draft is LOADED at DL. They need to try to aquire more mid-round picks by trading White and Scaife (or trade them for starting defensive players), need to move up into the 2nd rnd from 3rd and 4th rnd picks and possibly drop back in rnd 1 for an additional 2nd. You can make an argument that unlike most drafts, this draft probably has MORE 1st rnd picks than 32 and that a player taken at 20 is probably just as good as a player taken at 32. Only difference is preference. At 20 you probably have your pick of 5 players you WANT to draft. At 32...that group is probably narrowed to 1. But potentially, you could get a 1st rnd talent in rnd 2 and an early rnd 2 talent in the mid-late portion of the round. The Titans need a pass rusher, LB, CB at minimum. They could also use more DE talent and perhaps a future starter (though I'd be happier if Hope was replaced tomorrow if we had someone better).

    Um...

How THRILLED would you be if the Titans brought in Westbrook and paid him like LT? That's the kind of HUGE risk the Saints took with Brees. The ONLY reason they took that chance was because they were desperate. Shockey was similar but was not as much of a risk but he's also been banged up quite a bit. You CAN'T include Sharper in your point because he makes the Titans point. He couldn't catch on anywhere and eventually took a one year contract for like 1-1.5mil. He was a bargain hunters dream and one which the Titans hope to repeat!

You think a reporter wants to list the 200 phone calls the Titans made about UFA's, RFA's, and potential players they are interested in trading for? Most people would find that boring. That's why. Plus, teams want to keep their interest to themselves.

Point being, he wasn't a Superstar and a HUGE risk when they overpaid him to come considering there was a GREAT chance he'd not only be good or great, but never play again!

Of that list, Haynesworth entered free agency with 2 monster years and at a youngish age. His performances were on par with Defensive player of the year. He signed the biggest free agent contract for a D player...and how'd that turn out?

    Oy.

No. Jeremy Shockey at 27 with a broken leg and Brian Westbrook at 30 with 2 concussions in a season are not the same thing. Shockey, if i recall correctly, was also kinda in a pissing contest with Giants management.

As for the reporters, you do hear about every scrub on the planet that gets looked at, if we were talking to anyone with any actual name recognition, yes we'd hear about it. We've heard about Matt Jones, Togafau, Witherspoon, Jason Babin, and Marques Douglas already, not to mention the "talks" we've had with most of our UFA's.

Really don't think Brees was that big a risk, and I think he had his choice between a couple of teams (Dolphins?). It was a throwing shoulder injury, however.

The Redskins have a bunch of issues. DT is not one of them. In Tennessee on the other hand...

I will say this though, they locked up Cortland, Roos, and Stewart so... grats. I still don't see a deal for Tully or Tony Brown yet, easily the two most consistent players on our team last year.

This is not a great drafting team. The Colts had a lot of rookies in their secondary this season and didn't lose a game until week 15. Meanwhile, in Nashville...

We've spent 2 thirds on tight ends in 2 years, carrying four on the roster last year, we spent a second on a DT that we just have to pray develops, spent 4 picks on running backs in 4 years, one of whom may have been legally blind(a 2nd round), one who we refuse to play (also a 2nd), a first on a stripper loving corner, a first on a safety that's afraid to hit people, a third on a fumble prone return man that can't even compete for the nickel in coverage, and I don't know how many project WRs and GOD AWFUL safeties have rolled through here...

So this notion that, "Oh man, we need that third, how else can we carry 6 tight ends and 7 defensive tackles that coach (insert name here) LOVES despite the fact they never see the field on sundays..."

It DOES make one think why the hell not...

I did in '08 but it wasn't close last season.

I didn't expect 13-3 in '08. I didn't expect 8-8 last season. I don't think anyone can answer that question. I'm thinking most would see the Titans as a playoff team though.

    Agreed.

Having four of the five on the OL locked up for the next few seasons is a huge plus on a run-first team with the best RB in the game. I mentioned earlier in this thread that Amano's deal is less than what the Rams paid Jacob Bell two seasons ago. Amano may be asked to move to center as well.

That's the nature of the NFL to an extent but the better franchises don't mortgage the future unless it looks like a sure thing. A big part of consistency is a player's ability to play at that high level throughout their contract. Think Peppers is going to be racking up double-digit sacks in 2016 at age 36 in the final year of his contact?

Dansby is solid. He had 109 tackles last season, a sack and an INT. I won't pretend the Titans would move him outside. He's bigger than Tulloch. I think he'd be the most productive on the inside. But Tulloch had 121 tackles and two sacks last season. He had a better season than Dansby last year and hasn't peaked. So, though Dansby would be nice, I sign Tulloch long-term.

Samual? Who wouldn't want him? He's a rare talent. Every team in the league would want him. It's just a matter of what they're willing to give up.

We need to remember that signing a player with this kind of contract (6-years, $57.4 mil) does impact who the Titans can keep next year and beyond. Finnegan is a solid #1 who will be asking to be paid in the range of a Samual in 2012. If the Titans already had one huge contract at CB taking 1/12 of the entire cap, think they could do another for Finnegan? I doubt it. Something has to give.

Which is exactly what Polian had his first six seasons with the Colts.

It doesn't change the fact that you have to win in the regular season to even have a chance. 14 out of 17 of Reinfeldt's teams have had winning seasons. That's a lot of chances at a championship.

We've had one down season at .500 under Reinfeldt. We're not that fickle, are we?

We should call the FO out for moves that we think are questionable. Hell, we all should, and there have actually been some decent points made in this thread. However, I don't see why we would just call the FO inept when the product on the field has been pretty good. Their strategy that has become a theme isn't sexy, but it has been working.
