    Name each and every big name free agent these teams have signed the year or the year before they won the superbowl.

    Prove your point.

    You do realise that when they got those players they were not big name signings.

    Brees received little interest because of his shoulder surgery.
    Shockey was traded.
    Sharper had just been released (ironically from the Vikings who were a better team).

    They are the equivalent of Thornton, Mawae and Hope.

    Do you cheer the ridiculous spending from the Eagles, Cowboys, Redskins, Raiders when they fail to even reach the playoffs or get even close to the Superbowl?

    We really not that conservative with spending according to the payroll over the last two years.

    We were 9th in payroll in 2009:
    New York Giants
    $ 138,354,866
    Miami Dolphins
    $ 126,855,921
    Houston Texans
    $ 122,258,610
    New Orleans Saints
    $ 121,552,424
    Chicago Bears
    $ 120,672,110
    New York Jets
    $ 120,634,420
    Pittsburgh Steelers
    $ 119,292,960
    Green Bay Packers
    $ 114,579,603
    Tennessee Titans
    $ 113,494,050

    And we were 7th in 2008:
    Oakland Raiders
    $ 152,389,371
    Dallas Cowboys
    $ 146,401,600
    Minnesota Vikings
    $ 133,354,045
    Cleveland Browns
    $ 131,916,300
    New Orleans Saints
    $ 131,531,820
    Pittsburgh Steelers
    $ 128,815,061
    Tennessee Titans
    $ 126,017,443

    I don't think we need to do much, other than get a CB to fight it out in camp with our early pick (assuming we draft a DB high). I'd move Jason Jones to DE and then we're almost set on D.

    Naw man! You almost got him! In another 6 or 7 pages, he'll be admitting defeat. It is the internet after all. I'm pretty sure his line of argumentation is in its last throes.

    I haven't heard anyone say that all free agents are "average" or "overpaid" or "don't make a difference". What I've been saying is that outspending 31 other teams early in free agency usually results in overpaying.

    The Titans had the highest-paid free agent of 2009 on the roster in 2008 and it didn't get them a championship either.

    Based on what? No championships? Look at the last five years and tell me the Super Bowl Champions got there from picking up a big-time free agent.

    I will say, if all it took to get Cromartie from SD was a 3rd rounder, Mr. Reinfeldt should have been all over that.

    I'll say this in Alex's defense, surely Darren Sharper had a lot to do with the turnaround on that Saints defense. Gregg helped too, but Sharper did give some competence to a secondary that was sorely lacking it, and I think it is very fair to say that there are a couple guys out there who are def better that our current squad in our weakest area (Corner). We seem to be heading towards having one guy at corner who wont get beat every play and then harper, then some 1 yr pros and some rookies. That doesn't bode well.

    Yeah, we could end up over paying someone, but what's the worst that could happen? We go from the best record in the league to 0-6? What are we protecting? What's one bad contract for average talent on a team with (almost) no talent at that position at all?

    Nothing wrong with trying.
