    Eddy...

First off, we've PROVED to you the Titans are willing to spend...even OVERSPEND on players. They aren't as big gamblers...nor should they be in my opinion, but we've rattled off plenty of players they over paid to come here. If you know anything about the years '99-'03 you know we were overpaying our OWN players to keep them here. So you can't say we're afraid to spend...we've been doing it. And pretty smartly too.

Second, please tell me how many teams in the league have had 6 playoff teams since '99 with 5 of those teams being legit SB contenders?

It's funny that you discount Fisher's teams of '99-'03 and then again last year's dominant team...to say "we haven't been in 10 years (to the Super Bowl) and based off this year, it doesn't seem like we'll be back real soon."

Do you think the Steelers are taking the same approach?

We have a very good team if we can fix the defense. And based on how it was exposed, they know exactly what's wrong with it and how it needs to be fixed and or adjusted.

    Um...

I will look into this as it doesn't make much sense to me. If you HAVE to give a player more money than last year, virtually every RFA will have a 1st and 3dr round tender meaning none of them will be signed by another team.

Furthermore, the +20% salary is when you franchise a player you franchised the previous season. This was put in to prevent teams from paying the best player at his position the AVG of the top 5 so you can't continually keep franchising the same player and keep his salary lower over a long period of time.

Since Scaife would NOT be franchised, only tendered as a RFA, I don't think the franchise rule of +20% would apply, but I'll have to read it over.

I think if they have to pay Scaife MORE than he was paid last year, they MAY keep him in an uncapped year since there is no cap, but I think they are more likely to let him walk and use that money on a defensive player we need.

While it's possible some teams may go Steinbrenner or Snyder given complete freedom to spend as much as they'd like, I don't think a lot of teams will exceed the cap by much simply because the following year they will have to get back under. The simplest way to do that would be to offer a Julius Peppers a 1 year contract of $25mil and guarantee $15mil so as not to disturb the following years cap.

It was all about Polamalu, IMO. They were a totally different team without him in the lineup. He should return next season so I suspect their key issues in defense will be fixed.

  4. Rookies generally don't get more than minimal salaries, especially when you only consider the guys who only get 3 year contracts who normally could ever become RFAs in the first place. Once you throw out the first rounders, salaries are minimal. This year just happens to be different because it's the first time RFAs could include players who have already gotten a substantial 2nd contract.

No, if the top player at his position was franchised even once, he always got a bump in his salary instead of it going down to and average of what the top 5 at his position was. But generally the first time a guy was franchised, he usually wasn't coming off a big salary. A 20% bump off a rookie contract was usually less that the average of the top 5.

OK, I just read the CBA. If you read on pages 59-60, they talk about RFAs in an uncapped year. It looks like we can tender Scaife with a right of first refusal for just $1.176M, but that leave us with no draft compensation if he leaves. If we want any kind of draft compensation, we'll have to offer him a 10% bump in his 2009 franchise tag salary.

So, I'd say we'll tender him for the right of first refusal but not draft compensation.

A "legit Superbowl contender" that doesn't make it to the Superbowl much less win a playoff game is a legit Superbowl pretender.

    Huh?

So you'd say NONE of the current playoff teams are Super Bowl contenders since none of them have reached the Super Bowl???

And next year no team...including the teams that reach this years Super Bowl will be Super Bowl contenders since you don't agree that they are contenders UNTIL they reach the big game?

    Tj...

Are you gonna let Tomlin...a defensive coach slide because of ONE key injury? That's like saying Fisher can get a pass because we were missing our best corner for a few games...or we lost AH in the off-season so...oh well.

Come on. The Pitt D is not built around Polamalu. The ONLY player who really had something built around him is Manning. Not only is Manning's team built around him, but they have no depth and would probably be the one team where you could see them lose game after game without him in the lineup.

Sure that D is not the same without it's best player, but they also have one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL. Plus, they still have a complex scheme and can get after the QB (unlike us). Why were they having so many problems? A good part of it is there inability to run the ball......don't ya think?

They simply did not play well this season in many games and actually were worse than the Titans overall this season IMO. And we lost a lot more guys than they did and they just won the SuperBowl with nearly the same team. You don't think coaching had anything to do with it?

The Steeler defense finished fifth. They dropped in pass defense but remained a top 5 despite not having their best player.

You don't want to look at the Titans defense from '08 to '09. Night and day.

This rule sounds reasonable. Thanks for looking it up.

This gives the Titans some options. They can tender him and hope he sticks though I doubt it'll happen. He could possibly be traded. If someone gives him an offer (as I suspect they will), then they can match or allow him to walk depending on how they feel about Cook.

Though I'd hate to get nothing for Scaife, he would have walked anyway. Like yourself, I don't see them paying him the '09 franchise tag + 10%.
