Guys, Haynesworth did not sign a 7 year, 100 million dollar deal.

He signed a 4 year deal worth about 50M.

Years 5-7 of that deal have 50M in salary/bonuses, including a 29M Slaray/roster bonus year 5. Counting the cap charge from his prior signing and option bonuses - 5M before this season and 21M before next season - would put his cap charge in year 5 at a ridiculous 34M.

In other words, after 4 years and 48.2 million, Haynesworth will either renegotiate or be cut (leaving the skins to eat ~8M in dead money). Of course, that assumes there's a cap by then. If not, then he'll either renegotiate or be cut.

Anyone who thinks there's a chance in hell that Haynesworth ever sees the back 3 years/50M on his deal doesn't understand how NFL contracts work.

Are you seriously quoting tackle stats as a means of measuring DT play?

    Oh. Right.

You can't measure DTs by sack numbers, by tackles, or by... anything evident.

How about the sudden elevating in stats during contract years and then the leveling off again?

When am I allowed to post the numbers that show he has returned to being that "good" DT he always was before 2008?

Kris Jenkins has 2 tackles this season. Should have known there was a deeper reasoning behind that post.

Which alone should tell you everything you need to know about the usefulness of tackle stats in assessing DT play (did you watch either of the Jets games?). Some stats are useful - like KC Joyner's win % stats and Point of Attack wins, but in general, a DT's success is better measured in blockers tied up, gaps opened (in the passing game) and gaps closed (in the running game) - and, to a lesser extent (depending on the system and technique the DT is supposed to be playing), penetration and pressure generated.

For instance, I'm sure you've all seen the play by Jenkins in the Houston game, where he tossed the center aside, flew through the gap, and pressured Schaub into bailing out and chucking the ball away. A great (and successful) play. But if you're looking at tackle stats, that play is exactly as good (and exactly as bad) as a (hypothetical, since it's never happened :grrhee:) play where Jenkins gets dominated at the point of attack, knocked out of his gap, and the runner goes straight through the opened hole for a 90 yard TD. No tackle on either play, but vastly different outcomes and impact.

More basically, but less obvious to the casual fan, is a play where the DT holds the attention of both the center and guard, leaving the LB free to shoot the gap for a tackle, sack, or pressure. Watching the game, and looking at the stat sheet, the LB gets all the glory - he's the one who came flying through. But the reason that gap was there was the DT doing his job.

Bottom line - tackle stats are the worst possible means of evaluating a DT's play.

Does this mean Haynesworth's been great in DC? No. I haven't watched him there, so I couldn't begin to tell you. But it does mean that quoting his tackle numbers through 2 games is a horrible way to "prove" that he's been bad, good, or anything else.

Haynesworth has to be double teamed, that frees up the other guys to get after the QB.

Haynesworth doesnt have to get sacks to be great. Double Teams and Pressure is what make him a beast. Sacks and tackle are the bonus.
