JcBrave got it. Hanging leg lifts are the best ab workout I've ever tried. At least for results quick.

Some of us just don't have much in terms of abs without excessive work. Back when I was rowing in college, I worked out at least 3 hours per day, at least 6 days per week, and still didn't have really defined abs. I didn't have any belly fat though.

Since getting out of that workout schedule after college, I definitely built some weight up over a few years, and I've been doing hanging leg lifts three times a week for about five months. It may help with the belly fat, but it isn't getting me much in terms of tone. Then again, that's not really my overall goal, so I'm not doing many other ab-focused things.

Anyone can get it done if they make the time for it and want it badly enough. Different people require more or less work for certain muscles.

Take a look at p90x. It's quite the commitment but works great, plus you can do it all at home with just a few purchases. I had a goal weight I wanted to hit by my wedding and pasted it up by 10 pounds! Lost a little over 40 (also ate properly) plus became stronger than I have ever been. Didn't complete the full 90 days only got about about 2 and half months in too.

Now i just need to start it back up again...

Abs only show when you are very low on fat % in your body. Really low. It dont matter if you can do 5000 crunches sets, if you are not quite low on body fat.

Abs are more stabilizers than flexors. They are not only to bend your hip/keep high your legs but also to restraing the movement. If you do free weights that involve heavy weight training, the stabilization done will develop ab streght.

Siccors up and down and opening and closing work pretty good, they are isometric but add desestabilization, so they work the abs.

It is mainly the diet the hard part, though, but all the exercise help would make your dieting not so hard on you.

I'm currently training to graduate Basic Training for the Air Force, and just doing "military sit ups" and push up's 3 days a week, I've burned a loooooot of excess fat I gained this year, in my stomach and noticed a lot more strength in my core.

They say you can't just target a specific area to tone it or reduce bulge, for instance. But that seems to be garbage. I still have a horrible diet, I just stuck to my program. Combining a consistent workout with a healthy diet would just seem to build your endurance and help you lose weight/gain muscle.

So consider that. I do sets of 20 military sit ups (have someone/something pin your toes, only the heel has to touch the ground) with your hands crossed against your chest. I started out going up to 120, increase the next week by 20 when you're ready. I'd suggest Monday/Wednesday/Friday every week. But whatever you decide to do, always give yourself at least 24 hours for your body to recoup.

Just my .02 from personal experience.
