if his wife hadnt gone on in she wouldnt have been with her mother when she died.

uh he had another officer, a security guard from the hospital and finally a nurse all confirm his story and he still wouldnt let him go.
and the cop flat out lied on the tape,
he claimed if moats had just told him the situation from the first things would have been different.
the thing is moats and his wife from the first tried to explain her mother was dying now.
i am sorry but some times common sense and compassion have to play a part.

the officer could have asked to talk to someone in the hospital to confirm the story but he was far more interested in showing off his power then in protecting and yes serving the public.

but i am not suprised that he was also young and without a lot of experience.

Not handled well at all and no compassion shown.

It's a traffic ticket for crying out loud!

Cop should have done 2 things.

    1. Get the license.

    2. Call in the tag number and name for any outstanding warrants.

That would have taken 5-6 minutes and nobody could blame him for doing his job. It was an unusual situation to have such a constrictive period of time.

Detaining the whole family was bullcrap!

Alex, please don't act as if I haven't any idea. I have had more encounters with police then I care to think about. I'm just saying that while this officer did act like a jerk, Moats gave him every reason.

You can't be pulled over by police and just run off. How can you agree with that? All I am really saying is that all parties involved acted poorly. It began with Moats and his wife. I read the article, I took the time and watched the entire video, and every traffic ticket I ever got took 15 minutes.

I think it's a regrettable situation but based on the behaviors I saw in that video the cop wasn't all that bad considering the way he was treated from the refusal to pull over, to the evasion once parked, the yelling and disrespectful tones... When you don't stop for the police they get mad. They all do...

I do think the cop should have gotten soft and showed more sympathy, but did you see the cop? What was he age wise? Like 25? He lacked discretion because of a lack of experience. I bet he's an otherwise good cop.

I'm willing to bet that if the Moats party handles themselves better the officer does too.

I just watched the video on youtube and frankly for 2/3 of the ordeal the cop did nothing wrong. They don't stop right away and when they do stop 3 people come racing out of the car the cop is like WTF.

Then moats instead of saying in a reasonable voice we ran the light because my mother in law is dying and we want to see her before he is yelling at the cop as if the cop is supposed to know this already.

Then when the cop asks for basic information, license and insurance moats does nothing to cooperate.

How many times when a cop stops somebody are they on the way to visit a person who is going to die now this minute? The cop didn't know she was going to die in 10 minutes.

Maybe moats could have called the police on his cell while driving and said what was going on. My name is ryan moats i'm driving this type of car and we are rushing to the hospital to see my mother in law before she dies. I am using the caution lights.

Also it looks to me that 2 people from the car his wife i presume is one of them did go into the hospital.

because you've known me here for nearly four years and you might expect that based on some of the tales I've told in that time... plus a bipolar diagnosis can go along way to affect your impression as you work in the medical field and have likely seen more than your share of nut bars in that time.

I have been working in long term care since 1990 and have seen people on their death bed for as long as 3-4 days. If the woman bless her heart had held on for 15 more minutes we wouldn't be talking about this.

From the beginning they treated the cop like he had no business even pulling them over. You have the driver telling the cop to go into the car to get the insurance card. Why didn't he do it? Why would he tell the cop he has no insurance?

Speaking from expirence, theirs no such thing as a routine traffic stop or a low risk stop like someone mentioned earlier. Every time you pull a car over your taught and trained to expect the unexpected whether your dealing with someone thats 25 or 50. With that being said the article that i read reported that Moats drove with his hazard lights on which is exactly what your supposed to do when your involved in a emergency situation or when you want to warn other drivers that your vehicle is, or is about to become, a road hazard. The report said that he passed through several red lights with his hazard lights on which if your a police officer and you witness this, you have every reason to pull the vehicle over. The only thing i will side with the officer on this, is that it took almost a minute to pull Moats's car over with his sirens and lights on. A minute to some people may seem like nothing but to an officer that is a long time and definitley raises a red flag of concern. Now i know Moats wasnt in the right state of mind at the time which is understandable considering his situation but the officer doesn't know this. He's just trying to pull a car over who was caught running a red light with his hazard lights on and which it took around a mintue to pull over. Now i would approach the car with extreme caution with my hand on my gun, but i dont think it was necessary for him to have his gun out and pointed at Moats's family considering they pulled up right outside the hospital like the article reported. Common sense would have to come into play at some point but then again some officers are a little bit slower then others. Running a driver's and vehicle information can take less then a minute, all the time he spent arguing with Moat's he could of used to look up his info and sent him on his way. The fact he issued him a traffic citation after a nurse and security officer confirmed Moats's story makes this even more obsurd. Its an unfortunate incident and it's police officers like that who give the rest of the good stand up law enforcement officers a bad rep.
