Yes compensation is related to the number of games the player played. No there are no 1st rd compensatory picks.

    Yes...

IF proven, we would probably get a nice draft pick out of it or get to swap picks...something that would help us. However, these things are rarely proven and happen a LOT!

    Um...

I'm not exactly sure what the compensation is based on (and neither is anyone else) since the NFL uses a formula not made public. I think it is based on a few factors. First, the total # of free agents brought in vs how many left. Second, the quality of the free agent.

I think the quality depends on the contract that player recieves (vs other players at his position) and whether or not he's made the Pro Bowl (or MVP awards or Off/DEF player of the Year awards).

I believe the highest compensation you can get is a 3rd rnd pick...and since all comp picks occur at the end of the round...it'd be the first pick after the last team pick in rnd 3. It's one of the reasons why not franchising and trading away a Kearse or Haynesworth is wasting value. ANY 3rd rnd pick will be better than the comp 3rd rnd pick we could get for AH. And more likely, you're talking multiple picks with one being a first rndr if you traded a player like that.

Hope that gives you a better idea...

For once, I agree with you. I don't think the compensatory picks are tradeable. But I wouldn't mind us trading our 3rd-7th picks (i know we are missing the 4th or 5th can't remember which) and move up as far as we can. Or possible throwing our 1st in that deal to move up in the 1st round.

I dunno, I guess I almost always like the trade up strategy with those late rounders.

I still think we should have gotten a 3rd; however, we still made out well here.

Next year we should get a 3rd for Al for sure.

the original story quoted has since been changed. I think you're right, it is a 4, 5, 6, and 7... Not 2 4ths, 5, 6 like initially shown. I can't find the original but a friend pulled it up at work and it had been subsequently changed...

There are people who have studied the comp picks enough to come up with some coorelations. For example any Fa who signed for $800,000 a year or more got a comp pick and it is based on net players lost.

Playing time for the player is the next determinant.

The bears got a third rd pick for berrian. Bengals got a third for will smith.

Steelers fans are POd that they only got a 5th for faneca because of mewelde moore.
