Keep in mind, we were in a bidding war with the Rams for Bell. Just because he got 6 million doesnt mean it would not have gone up even more if we did not want to match their bids. We just dropped out at 6 million.

    Contract details:

    Jacob Bell
Signed a six-year, $36 million contract. The deal contains $13 million in guarantees, including a $7 million signing bonus. His base salaries in years one and two are guaranteed. 2008: $2 million, 2009: $4 million, 2010: $5 million, 2011-2013: $6 million,

It's not just about the contract value. The guaranteed money is the main issue. I'd be surprised if Scott got more than $7.5m guaranteed.

Also, a 6-year contract for an OL is risky IMHO. We have seen some O-linemen get old in a hurry. Bell will be 33 before his contract is up, and they'll still be taking cap hits in 2013 if they cut him before then.

Not what I am saying AT ALL.

Let me clarify. With Bell, we knew what we had. With Scott, we BELIEVE the player will be good and work well with our current O-line.

The trade-off, is known vs. unknown, certainty vs. uncertainty.

I am undecided on MR as an evaluator of talent. I see good moves and questionable moves. Please point out to me where I advise him to "use a chunk of money to sign mediocre players". I don't think I've ever posted something suggesting that we waste money as a good option.

I think you completely mistook what I was trying to say.

    Let me clarify further:

This signing is good. Yay. Go Scott. I truly hope it works, I was all for us signing him once Bell was cut.

But, I don't understand why Bell wasn't re-signed instead of signing Scott. Two players, with seemingly similar overall talent, with a VERY VERY similar price tag. Re-signing Bell, instead of signing Scott, does NOT EQUAL cap hell. It doesn't put us in danger of cap hell. Re-signing Odom and extending AH, Roos, Stewart, and Bironas would not put us in cap hell.

Signing Kearse was good. Kearse > Laboy. Much much better price. However, Kearse does not fully replace Odom/Laboy, so we still have a new need.

Re-sign Gage, good and good price.

Signing Crumpler, excellent. Our only real addition to the team this FA. Scott = Bell, Kearse = not as good as Laboy/Odom combo. Those are not additions, they are replacements.

    Great post Carpy.

I just hope we aren't releasing Scott and taking cap hits on him for the next 3 years, when we could've had a solid Bell for 6 years.

I want it to be the right decision. It was basically, stuck with Bell for a minimum of 4 years before you could release him with minimum negative cap hits, or stuck with Scott for 2-3 years before we can release him with minimum negative cap hits.

I'm certainly not undecided at Munch as an evaluator of talent.

Who was the last O-linemen that we whiffed on? Even guys that were productive for us were let go at exactly the right time (Piller, Hartwig etc).

The Titans front office haven't earned the right to be secong guessed on their ability to judge WR talent, but IMHO they have earned a little "blind faith" when it comes to O-Linemen.

Apparently, Munch and the front office didn't feel that way. They see a player who is just as good (if not better with more experience) in Scott. They've watched the guy play first-hand for four years. It's not like they didn't know him.

What's any more uncertain about this than signing a WR or anyone else for that matter? The Titans felt it a better option.

Then point out ANY deals over the last two weeks which you feel should have been made by the Titans.

With the possible exception of Odom, there has been none, IMO. The talent was either not an upgrade on who we have or they were overpaid.

  10. I'd say this was a pretty good signing. Scott is certainly going to be cheaper than Bell. He is getting barely more in 4 years than what Bell gets from the Rams in the first 3 years.

Bell was a quality starter but never a great one. Scott can step in and start and we don't have to worry about 1 guard spot. The other spot can go to whoever wins a camp competition. And the other 2 guys are valuable depth.

I don't think Scott is a huge upgrade from Bell, but he's about an even swap. And for less money.
