Hoo boy...a touchy subject....could drift into the pros and cons of instant replay.

I heard on ESPN radio this morning (afternoon to you) some commentary about how IR is used as a 2X microscope in some places and a 50X microscope in others, which can become a problem. (This was concerning a pass in/completion decision on MNF, which I didn't see.)

That was the national broadcast. The local broadcast wound up in the same argument over a ref call in the UH game vs. Washington.

How much IR do we really want? Do we need redeye-beam cameras scoping the field bounderies? Robot referees? The only honest answer to these types of questions depends upon who's ox is being gored.

I actually don't mind a blown call every once in a while - you hate to see it happen, but it's the player's job to not put a ref in the situation of splitting hairs trying to decide if someone was in or out or if they caught the ball, etc... The thing that irritates me is the inconsistency from crew to crew and game to game. Some officials call pass interference for a DB looking at a receiver the wrong way. As much as certain crews are responsible for bad calls, I mostly blame the league for some of the nutty rules they've manufactured recently. They've tried hard to inflate scoring to make the game more exciting, but the rules they put in place leave too much gray area that leave refs with too much interpretation and guesswork. Pay the refs. Make them full time. And let the players just play football.

I didn't see the play so I can't comment on that but once it goes to replay it is that person/s call...the refs on the field are out of it then. Remember there has to be enough evidence to over rule it. I think that is the part that gets them. If it had been ruled a catch would there have been enough evidence to over turn it...double edge sword

This may not be accurate, but I pulled this from Yahoo.

I've always been under the impression that made good money, but everyone else is acting like they don't paid squat. Maybe I'm an idiot (It's been proven before...), but I would love to have a job working 16 days a year and make 40k. Many Americans don't even make that a year.

They don't just work 16 days. They work during the week also, reviewing game film, going over thier grades from previous games, they are tested weekly on the rules, and the season is actually about half a year including preseason, training camp and the longer regular schedule due the bye weeks.
That is not counting most of these guys have other jobs or businesses they run also.

Reading that job description makes me depressed for them! :sarcasm:

Seriously, who wouldn't gladly take this job? (That is if the NFL actually hired us...)

40,000 dollars to go watch football games on Sunday, an excuse to watch more football during the week, and an excuse to tell the wife to leave you alone during the game is not a bad day at the office. All kidding aside, it would be a difficult job. However, YOU select your job! Your job doesn't select you.

No one is whipping these guys and saying "You must have two jobs". It's their choice. If they can't handle the stress, then they need to quit one of them.

I don't think throwing more money at them is going to solve the problem, maybe you could attribute it to a lack of training.

Yea, but the expertise they have to have to do their job is pretty hard to find. Many of these guys have come out of pro football or college football. They make good money in other jobs, and offering 40K isn't worth it to them to work full time. Like Rebel Titan said... some of them are lawyers and business men in their real jobs, and they just do this for fun and love of the game. The NFL makes crazy amounts of money, and they need to shell it out to really get and keep the best refs. Doesn't seem like the current system is working as well as it should.

So, with games that have millions of dollars tied up in them, a guy making as much money as a grounds keeper can spin the game any way he wants. Ed Hochuli is often reguarded as running the best crew in the NFL. He is also a lawyer. If Ed had to make a decision to stick with one career, which one do you think he would choose???

I understand what you're saying, but it isn't working.

I believe that from seeing about 4 bengals games this year...TJ Whosyourmomma is the biggest baby in the league. He is very vocal and crying to the refs all the time. Since i do not like the bengals im thinking man in Bball that would be technical. I think that the refs should start calling technicals in the NFL and stop the game and let the other teams kicker kick a 20 yards extra point for 1 point more. That would be fun:))
Yeah right, im not that much of an idiot. But yeah i think they should call 5 yard technical foul penalities because i bet the refs get blasted during the games...and ive really only seen one ref this year blast back...ravens dude...its unsportsmanlike conduct and the league should look into it. I can see if they blast for a little bit and the ref gives a warning... but this would keep the players mouths shut...even though i like it when players go back and forth, thats just part of the game

Yup and some big time bookie can come in and offer a couple hundred grand to make that spin in his favor. I know there have always been some questionable calls but this year it is rampid and after what happened with the basketball refs there are red flags everywhere for corruption. Another poster wrote this as well but the ones that are really disturbing are the ones that go to review and the right call still does not get made. I know some are borderline but there have been several this year for several teams that have been clear cut but the ref just did not overturn it. Some of this stuff needs to be investigated and penalties put in to place. I mean if you're a ref and you get an offer like that, most of the time you don't even have to swing the game for one team or the other just keep the points within a certain spread.
