    Young Apologizes for Suspension

SUMMARY: On Monday, Titans QB Vince Young apologized before a large group of media about his suspension for last week's preseason opener against the Redskins. "I broke the rules, I can't play. You have to go by the rules," Young said. "It is like your mom telling you if you don't do your homework you can't go out and play, and that is basically what the situation was and I can't say nothing about it." Coach Jeff Fisher suspended Young for violating a team rule regarding curfew. The second-year pro spent Friday night at home instead of at the team hotel. "I apologize to my teammates, coaches, fans and everybody," Young said. "I really feel like I am not a bad guy, but I made a bad decision to try to go home and get some rest in my own bed. It happens, I was the one that got singled out and being one of the leaders I can't do that, but at the same time I guess (Fisher) got his message across to the rest of the team and now we are moving on and getting ready for the next team."

You just have to wonder, since it seems other players were doing the same thing, if this was addressed at a team meeting? Did Fisher say, OK, I know some players are going home instead of staying at the hotel, and if it happens again, you will be suspended....or did he just wait and drop the hammer?

It sounds like there were a number of players who went home but Fisher only suspended Young. I'm thinking that got the message across.

If it wasn't Vince who made the apology, I would have considered it lame. He pretends to own up, and then excuses himself because other players were doing it. That's pretty lame. I think his image is taking hold of him. And sometimes that is good, and sometimes that is bad. We have to wait and see. But he's trying to live up to his image now, and that is reflected in his statement. "I really think I am not a bad guy". Please. Yes. You were. You just had a few other bad players join you. He used the word "I guess." too. That is what a little kid would say. Because it was Vince and sort of talks in this way by stating both sides as they would see it, I'll let it go because he seems to like telling the whole story as it was. And that was the truth. He laid the truth out there. But someone owning up doesn't do that. They take full responsibility. They don't say I did it cause everyone else was doing it. So That's just my take. But I thought it was weak. It sounded like an immature apology. An ok one, an honest one, but not the best.

Sorry Phi....I disagree...Simply because the rest of the statement you left out said "BUT I made a bad decision." That shows he feels he isn't a bad seed per se but he made a mistake....

This is what is funny to me....VY wasn't the only one who wasn't at the hotel. But Fish singled him out to basically punish the entire team. So, you're telling me that you wouldn't be the least bit upset about that? If not then kudos to you my friend. I would be upset. But guess what, I would be a man and still apologize as he did. He didn't point fingers at anyone. He basically said as one of the leaders he can't do that.

So, sounds like to me he owned it. Then squashed it. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. The life we all live.

I don't know, put yourself in Vince's shoes. If others really did it too and did not get suspended, you'd be a little pissed about being singled out and embarrased in front of a national TV audience, and you'd be disappointed that you've been working all off season and you finally have a chance to go play another team and it gets yanked out from under you. If that is what happened, then I think he was as nice about it as he could be. Hell, it says he kept trying to change the subject and the reporters kept badgering him about it until he finally said that last part. To me it sounded like he's trying to balance his emotions about being singled out against his logical understanding that he's the QB and he's got to set the example. For a young guy, he did okay and nothing he said is inflammmatory.

All I can say is that its time to move on from what in the end, really is a pretty minor incident. When your QB's big transgressions are that he was a little late for a team flight and he went home to sleep in his own bed, it's hard to get too upset about it.

Let's just all be thankful we're not the Falcons. ;)

    Mawae said it best:

"You make your bed, you lie in it,'' center Kevin Mawae said. "And that is not just him, it is for anybody in an NFL locker room. "If you want to be a leader, you have to act like one. I don't know all the circumstances and details behind what happened with Vince, but I know a team rule was broken and he got punished for it.''

Sure, VY got singled out. But that is the price of all the glory that a leader gets. It stung Vince pretty good to learn that lesson and I think that is why his apology was somewhat ambivalent. I think he will respond positively to the suspension and I applaud Fisher for handling it the way he did.

    At least he didn't say,
"I haven't been suspended, I was only getting something to eat, the media is just picking on me, I didn't do anything wrong, REDEMPTION!!!"
