Cool, but don't tell them that until after you've got the price you want - because if they know they aren't going to make money on financing they won't come down as far on the price.

And that's exactly why they do it.

A dealer is guaranteed what they call dealer by back from the manufacturer. That is they get 10% of the sticker back when they sell the car regardless of what they sell it for. So if you take a car that the dealer bought from the man. Say for $32,000 and the sticker is $40,000 you could reasonably talk them down to $29,000 and they would still make a $1,000 profit. They won't do that but you could. If you have some time and you don't mind working for it you could pick say 10 dealers with in a reasonable driving radius and send them specs for them to bid on. That is decide what you would like to buy and spec it out. Send them a list of what you want (Vehicle and extras) and ask for them to return their bid to you by a certain date. Not all will bite but if you have a few dealers needing to move a vehicle and they think that they are competing for your business they will give you a good price. Some friends of mine and I have used this method and we usually get a quote around 4% above invoice. So that 40,000 sticker price would be $33,280 saving you nearly $7,000. Also, don't forget rebates these come directly from the man. so you get them regardless of the price the dealer gives you. If the man. is offering $2,000 back your now down to $31,280 plus your trade in. In 2002 I bought a Ford F-150 Supercrew Lariat w/ the FX4 package. A vehicle I would not be able to afford if I bought if off the lot at the local dealer. The sticker was $39,000 with 4% above invoice, the rebates and my trade in I wound up paying $29,000 which was more in my budget.

The only deal will be you have to set a date for bids to be returned and you will have to stick to your guns. I've had a dealer call me the day after and ask me what my lowest offer was and he was going to try to beat it. That stuff is not fair and I had to tell him no, if he wanted to make an offer he should have just like everyone else.

Oh. Most people would tell you to never buy in the summer time. Everyone buys in the summer time, so dealers aren't near as desperate as they are during colder months.

My first advice would be to go to the forums for the model you are looking at and see what other buyers say about it.

If you are looking at a Nissan product, go to freshalloy.com and read through the posts. You can also find out what folks in other parts of the country are paying, and also find out what is pretty close to true invoice.

It was there that I read where the troubled Q45 was not going to be in the 2007 lineup. Deals to be had, but still too expensive.

It is a very complex and a very well guarded secret what the dealer actually pays, with hold back, floor plan, and even regional incentives.

You will be very wise to secure financing ahead of time. These days most dealers make a killing once you sit down in the finance office.

I'm waiting on the Skyline to hit the US, hopefully under the Infiniti brand.

If you haven't bought yet, today would be a great day. It's the 28th, most dealerships aren't open on Sunday (the 29th) so today is the day when those who are below quota will really be pushing to get it done. Monday and Tuesday won't bring them nearly as much traffic as Saturday does. There are bonuses and, in some cases, job security on the line if they don't make their monthly quotas enough times. I sold cars once for about six months right out of college, and I do know that the end of the month is the right time to buy. At times, in order to get to their quotas, they will actually sell at little or no profit. You just have to be one of the lucky customers that shows up at the right time and helps them get over the hump, so to speak. I'm sure this is not the case everywhere, but the quota system is pretty much industry wide as far as I know.

Unfortunately, it's going to be waaay out of my price range. At least 35k.

I'm going to get a used Vette once out of school. You can get 2004's for around 25k. It goes against my standards buying GM, but it's the cheapest speed money can buy. And it actually looks good. I've got a WS6 trans-am for the same reason, but it just doesn't feel right.
