I don't know a lot about this, but from what I can tell we're sure to get one next year.

  2. It's basically all about the net loss of UFAs and their value. So far, the only big contract signed by one of our UFAs is Drew Bennett. Robaire Smith got a solid contract, as did Wade. On the flip side, we signed Gage, Harper, and Scott, so we are a net of 0, though we'd probably be in line for a late pick on overall value as of right now.

Is that based on this year's free agency or last year's? the latter might make more sense, we signed a lot more players than we let go and it's a lot easier to judge a players value a year later. And how could you possibly justify NE getting four picks based on this year's FA period?

  4. Last year's UFAs determine this year's compensatory picks.

I think the compensatory pick system should be done away with. Just because a team screws up their cap or are too cheap to pay market value for a player, shouldn't entitle them to extra draft picks. I see 19 picks here that are going to push our picks down to a lower position. It is especially unfair that the Colts win the SB and get all those extra high picks. This system rewards the best teams and does not contribute to equality in the league.

The idea behind comp picks is a good one IMO, helping teams rebuild through the draft if they've lost a lot of players through FA, but I do think they could do some tweaking to make it based more on performance, maybe compare the player lost to the player that replaced him in the starting lineup. Look at the Chargers for example, they got the highest comp pick (#33 in round 3) for Drew Brees, but Philip Rivers came in and did fine, there wasn't enough of a dropoff at the position IMO to justify the top compensatory pick, so Brees did have much better numbers this year than Rivers, but he was also in a much more pass oriented offense, looking at it this way, Brees had 3576 yards in 2005 Rivers had 3388 in 2006, Brees was 24/15 tds/ints in '05, Rivers was 22/9 in '06, the system could definately use some tweaking to be a bit more performance based, might help it actually do what it intends.

I respectfully disagree. If MLB did this, it would be a much better sport.

For once, I would like the NFL to steal an idea from the NBA and have the bottom five teams go into a lottery for draft positions 1-5.

I think they should do the NBA style contract system for rookies as well.
