Funny you use this play as an example. Because when I saw this retarded play calling, I was angry at the tv. 3 guys in coverage, and the best option is Supernaw. Half their unit is playing coverage. And if you throw it to Supernaw there, it likely gets broken up by whoever is on the right (OLB or CB?). This play is an exact reason why this scheme is garbage.

Yeah, right. If you think this is just a single play and doesn't represent a consistent problem with Mariota, then you're delusional.

Why wouldn't you throw to Decker who is 1-1 with the DB deep?? Clearly the best option (provided your QB has accuracy on deep throws...).

So we should just go empty on every play and send 5 man on routes. Yeah that'll work...
Seriously, what is it people don't understand about play calling? You're trying to anticipate what the opponent will do. In this case we probably thought they we're going to bring pressure, so we kept extra blockers in. Even then we actually had pretty good matchups. Mariota just picked the most difficult throw to make and didn't make it.

The real problem though is that he didn't even look for anything else. You're complaining that we're only sending 2-3 men on routes. But when he doesn't even go through progressions, what's the use of sending more??

I’ve been clear I think it’s a consistent problem with this scheme. Our WR’s drop passes when they are on target. Our running game is stale. The whole production of this scheme is inconsistent.

Mariota is doing as well as any QB could in this archaic, easy to predict and stop scheme.

Run up the middle for negative 4 yards.

Gimmick play that worked once last year and hasn't worked the 52 times since.

3rd and 14, good luck Marcus.

    ..

I can see why he doesn't care for the current system.

Any play given to Marcus that ends up being a called run play to Murray and he tries to run East and West instead of North and South always ends up as a negative play. It's hard to overcome this every series.

Everyone is able to gravitate to the middle and right side of the field because absolutely nobody is on the left. Which is why the LB was able to be in such a good position for the INT, not much of an area he had to defend. Murray breaks out late, but there is a spy on him, so it would have amounted to nothing as he was trailing him.

This is not a good play design. Mariota is seeing nothing but a sea of red jerseys in the areas where he can actually go with the ball. Maybe one of the elite QBs in the league could have made something out of this, but it is a lot to ask for Mariota to fit it in those windows. There's also no escape route, as there are spies and zone coverage in the middle of the field, and the edge rushers are basically there to keep him in the pocket and force him to run up the middle if he's going anywhere.

This is a perfect example of why he is struggling. A very difficult play for him to execute, if it is even possible. Modern offenses make it easier on the QB with more intelligent route designs, which is why the stats of today's QBs is so much better than it once was.

Also, look at that first illustration; there were 9 guys within a few yards of the LOS. They were able to defend the pass play that we called, as well as any run play that we would have attempted. Here's your answer to this offense's struggles.

I hope LA beats our asses, maybe we'll steal some plays and look half competent week-17 for the AFCS
