Sean Payton or any offensive minded type of coach that is not stuck in the 80s. Rams, Eagles, Raiders, Dallas seem to be developing their young QBs just fine. I just know Mularkey, Robiskie and DLB are no good.

the only one of those QBs who ran a similar read option run/pass offense like Mariflota was Dak, and he's been a total surprise. He can also improvise outside/inside the pocket and keep plays alive, he's already light years ahead of Mariflota.

But if you want to talk about Wentz/Carr/Goff, all coming from spread passing attacks, we can do that. Each 3 have more arm, better passing concept knowledge and read recognition. Sean Payton would go absolutely nuts watching Mariflota bail out of the pocket backwards and float balls. Drew Brees is a prototypical pocket passer, I played with and against him in high school and college, he hasn't changed a bit.

Mariflota may have been hamstrung by the great Chip Kelly offense, which didn't teach him true passing concepts, but "holes created by options". Mariflota was taught to throw to spots on the field, not to players.

I fully understand that finding "THE guy" is difficult and hit or miss. But personally I'd rather start that process sooner rather than later if I don't believe in a guy.

That said, everyone believes in Mariota so hopefully you guys are right. I just can't fathom he'll win us a Superbowl, which is the ultimate goal.

I have been a Mariota supporter from day 1 and still have faith he can be near-elite, but cracks are starting.

Is this just an off year due to him thinking too much and trying to play the "prototypical pocket passer" role? Or is he a victim of a severly inept coaching staff and scheme who is not playing to his strengths, but actually setting him up for failure? Perhaps he just doesn't have it and will end up a disappointment.

I really wish I knew the answer. Its much too easy to say "he sucks" or "its the coaches fault", but we really won't know for sure until the coaching staff is changed and a new system is in place.

Has anyone gone back and watched the routes the wr's are running? They are awfully designed and often terribly executed. Its no wonder the passing game is so bi-polar!

Mariota "may" not be the guy, but this coaching staff is unquestionably dragging the team down. The only way we win is when there are great performances by a few of the actually good players on the team.

If he throws 4 TDs and zero picks for 300 yards next week is he a franchise QB again?

Mariota had a decent rookie year followed by a good 2nd year in the league. This year he has regressed, I am not sure what it is but he seems to play scared and panicks too much. As mobile as the the guy is he doesnt have no awareness and he cant keep plays alive like the guys in the league of Russel Wilson & Dak Prescott.

We hated Whisenhunt as our HC as we do now with Mularkey, but at this point IF he still was our HC - i could see Mariota’s game either developing or regressing. By now, we could’ve known if he was a franchise QB or not, that way if he wasnt we would of moved on and start our team all over again trying to find the right guy to lead the team. He atleast catered to his skill-set, rather than make this team a RB team. One positive thing that comes from this front office is Jon Robinson, and I fully support him and would like to see how fast he gives up on MM8 or Mularkey.
