Does Mularkey's history suggest major shift in offense?

I think they did better than anyone felt they would...We had no problems scoring, but our defense sucked. That said, we definitely had a strange way of using/not using players at times. I'm curious to see what we do this year.

The scoring offense was 11th, scoring defense was 16th. So no, the offense didn't "have no problems scoring", and the defense didn't suck. The defense was average, offense was above average. Had the offense been as great as you are claiming, we would have been in the postseason. I'm not putting the lack of a playoff berth on the offense, but I'm not going to needlessly blast the defense when there were teams with worse defenses who made the playoffs.

Okay stats guy...Show me our rank as a pass defense and where we were...We were not average. We got damn lucky that nobody got seriously hurt, because we had little depth. Average QB's have been gashing us for quite some time...and you just said it yourself, our offense was indeed better than our defense rank wise, and we just added waaaaay more weapons.

And we had no receiving threats...I agree...It's amazing we did as well as a 9-7 record with the grocery baggers we had...Don't sit here and act like we got some great defense that doesn't get credit though. We were likely 16 because we play in a crap division 6 games a year. Ask any football fan to name more than 2 people on our defense...you'll be waiting quite some time.

Well Indy doesn't exactly have a crap offense, and they didn't have any trouble against the defense, and the Jaguars clearly didn't either as well, so that leaves you 3 games. Every division has teams who suck on offense. That's why QBs are coveted, because you can't score without them.

As I have pointed out, every victory that we had, the defense did their job. No shootouts whatsoever. They could have been better, but they overachieved given the pile of garbage in that secondary. I would expect a team with a top O Line, Running Back, TE, and mobile QB who people claim to be the New Messiah to be above average. A team whose #1 CB had to be converted to safety on the Browns shouldn't be able to stop a nosebleed, but they obviously kept the scoring as low as you could expect for them to.

I think we should all be skeptical about coaches based on previous success or lack of it. Hell thats how the whole thing works, Mularkey has given us a reason to be excited, he has also given us reasons to be skeptical. There is also so much done behind the scenes that we will never know, stats at the end of the day will always be missleading because sometimes it comes down to a bit of luck, call a perfectly designed offensive play, and the defensive coordinator happens to pick the perfect defense. Hell, how many times have we seen guys make plays due to the fact they were out of position? Luck is a huge factor.

    Lol.

The one thing you constantly overlook is a little thing called talent.

I don't have to project stats because Delanie Walker made them a reality. He was good enough to be the #2 TE in San Fran, behind Vernon Davis, and got a handful of starts every year because they ran a double tight end offense. He was good enough for a team that had a need at TE to sign him as a starter.

You can cling to your projection of Antonio Andrews and wait until August when he gets cut to see if a team signs him as a starter and runs for 2100 yards. Good luck with that.

Tajae Sharpe was also "good enough" to be a #2 WR, and got a handful of starts. By your logic, if he went to a new team and became the #1 WR, he could simply catch twice as many passes and become a 1,000 yard receiver. Getting open is just so easy, even when you're the focal point of the defense's coverage unit and your supporting cast sucks.

Your argument is idiotic because there are dozens of 20 reception receivers in the league, as Walker was for 7 seasons in SF, whose limited production as a backup clearly wouldn't translate to a #1, marquee role. Walker had this role his first season in TN, and had fairly average production. He became a legitimate receiving threat when Mularkey signed on, despite scrub QBs who are no longer in the league or can't stick to a roster. Need I remind you that you claimed them to perform much better than the QB s in 2013, despite throwing for fewer yards and a lower team QB rating. Do you mind explaining that?

You keep typing up all of these paragraphs to say the same thing. "Let's project this guy into this role and see what happens."

I don't need to project. Walker did it. He would have done it regardless of Mike Mularkey. He did do it without Mike Mularkey.

If you refuse to see that Walker(9.5 to 14.1), Wright(11.5 to 12.5), and Nate Washington(15.8 to 16.2) all had their YPC increase when the team went from noodle-armed Fitzpatrick to guys who could push the ball down the field, then there's just nothing I can say to make you see the light.

You're absolutely right. Wright and Washington averaged 1 yard or less per catch greater in 2014 than 2013, which totally offsets the fact that they combined for 55 fewer catches and 636 fewer yards than they did in 2013. They may have gone from borderline 1,000 yard receivers to producing slightly more than Tajae Sharpe, but I'm sure they have plaques on their wall to commemorate that 1 and 0.4 yard increase in YPC. And the QBs may have had lower QB ratings, passing yards, and completion percentages in 2014, but they averaged 0.3 more yards per attempt than the QBs in 2013 because they were so good at pushing it up the field.

The only player to increase his catches, and significantly increase yards and YPC was Delanie Walker. It's not because of the QB play, because those guys sucked, and the other receivers were considerably less productive with them around. He just became a better player that year and beyond.
